I just got my Timney trigger mech in the mail and I can't remove the foward retaining pin from the old mech. any suggestion?

Re: Foward retaining pin in rem 700 trigger mech

I've removed the rear one with no problems. I also tried lubing it up pretty well

Re: Foward retaining pin in rem 700 trigger mech

Can we assume that you removed the rear pin and the bolt stop already?
The bolt stop needs to come out to be able to drive the front pin out.
The front pin hole is sometimes peened closed on the side opposite the bolt stop so you HAVE to drive the pin out from the side with the bolt stop.

I hope so, but we know what happens when we assume......

+1. I've never had any problems with trigger pins in the 700 being difficult. But the bolt stop has to be removed before you can get to or drive out the front pin.

Also if driving out the rear pin toward the safety make sure the safety lever is out of the way.

Re: Foward retaining pin in rem 700 trigger mech

Just finished one for a friend. If you use a really skinny pin punch, you can drive out the front pin with the bolt stop in place. But mine had only a little punch mark on the other side of the pin, to stake it in. BTW, I had to moly lube the trigger top edge to get a pull under 3 lbs. The thing would go from 3 lbs, then with 1/4 turn out on the pull adjustment, to not holding the sear at all. Moly lube gave me a nice 1 1/2 lb pull.

Re: Foward retaining pin in rem 700 trigger mech

With the action inverted (upside down), Bothe pins need to be driven out from left to right when looking at it from the rear, the same side as the bolt stop.the rear pin is removed first and the bolt stop and bolt stop spring removed. The sear and sear spring will drop out so make sure you hold you hand underneath to catch them. Next drive out the front pin and remove the trigger.

Do not drive them out toward the pean mark in the bottom of the action. Also when assembling, most of the newer pins have a taper on one side; this is the side to insert into the action

Re: Foward retaining pin in rem 700 trigger mech

yea you guys were right I didn't remove the bolt stop reset. Once I completely removed the rear pin I was able to take the front pin out. But man it was a PITA getting that spring back in.

Re: Foward retaining pin in rem 700 trigger mech

There is an easy way to deal with the spring.

Reinstall both trigger pins. Drive them in far enough so that the bolt stop will slide into place.

Take the spring and slip the hook into the slot in the action and put the loop of the spring over the portion of the rear pin that is sticking up into the recess milled for the spring to sit in.

Push down on the forward leg of the spring and slip the bolt stop into place with the forward portion of the bolt stop pointing down at more of an angle than it normally sits.

Let off the spring. The spring will come up and put pressure on the bolt stop, holding it in pace while you flip the rifle over and drive the pin through from the other side. Make sure the holes are properly alignined before you get after it with the punch.

After the pin is driven through, pivot the forward portion of the bolt stop up into the action and the spring will snap into place along the bottom side of it.

This is how I figured out to do it.
Good description of the process...

That what I did in the end it just took a few tries to have everything lined up

+1
If I'm having a tough time with it lining up I'll tap the rear pin from right to left a touch to put a little pressure on the bolt stop then wiggle it into alignment then drive the pin into place.
