Supposedly Barrett was having problems with the aluminum not holding up as well as the steel M82. I don't know how true this is but it makes be think twice before putting a 50 BMG in an aluminum gun.

I don't know what else you want us to recommend if it's not a bolt-action or direct impingement. A semi-auto M2? Lahti L39, PTRS 41?
Personally I'm tempted to look into Serbu's semi auto, but honestly for a .50bmg ELR is where it's at, and I'd prefer to squeeze as much accuracy out of the system as I could. I lean heavily towards a heavy, super-accurate single-shot bolt action with a USO SN-9.

I have those at work and they aren't really the favorite tool of use. It seems on the civilian side to be more of a novelty or status symbol IMO and it has the cool factor to wow your friends. I agree with the posts above on the AI and HTI guns for accuracy and a cheaper price point.

I would buy an M82A1A if I had the cash. However the desire is purely because I carried one and they are a ton of fun to send that much lead downrange that quickly.
However if there were any practical needs left unfilled in my inventory, I would get those first. They are most definitely not the best tool for ELR precision.

Only YOU can determine if it is worth it TO YOU.
They are incredibly fun to shoot and will impress all who you encounter at the range, but depending on your specific purposes for buying the rifle, there are a TON of better and arguably less expensive options.
Again, knowing WHY you want it and WHAT you plan to do with it would be helpful in pointing you in the right direction for the Barrett or other possible options.

I've used them...they are 3moa. Way better options out there unless you plan on using it for it's intended purpose, taking out vehicles.

If you don't have a specific need for it (heavy equipment engagement, barrier penetration), get a bolt- single shot or otherwise. I was never impressed with the accuracy of the M107's I've shot... and the one my team had was brand new.

Agreed, M82/M107 is more for engaging hard targets, and not meant for accuracy.
I think most of us don't have a "Need" for 99% of the stuff we own. We get it not because we "Need" it, but because we WANT it. For me, that is all the reason I "need".
I don't know why we criticize the M82/M107's accuracy. 3-4 MOA is good enough for any gun, for a .50 cal semi-auto, it is more than good enough.
Every Military Rifle excluding bolt action, is 3-6 MOA with standard FMJ Military grade ammo. The M82/M107 can shoot standard FMJ, Tracer, API, AP, APIT all just fine, the only one the M82 can't shoot is the 750gr AMAX. The 750gr AMAX was not meant for the M82 (even says so on the ammo box).

I just picked one up. Been wanting one for years.. and it finally came. Think i bought it for a decent price, you guys tell me.. Had about 100 rounds through it max.. NF 12-42x56mm NP-1RR ( i dont like the reticle or that much magnification) Drag bag, all the normal others that are included on a new purchase.. ( pelican case, carrying handle) all for 8k.. Was this a deal, a steal or just what it was worth... Not trying to steal this thread but im curious to know how did i do?. This is my first 50..

I have them at work, like shooting them, but would never spend that much for one. I like hitting engine block size targets at 1500 meters but sub .5 MOA is what interests me and the 107 was not built for that.

The one I got is alot of fun to shoot, but my Cobb ba-50 will shoot circles around it. They only good thing about the Barrett semi's is they hold their value and aways go up all most every year

I think it's too much for what you get. I can't speak for everyone else, but it would make more sense to me to just save thousands of dollars by getting the M107/M82A1.

I've shot a few out to around 800 yards, and I can attest to its "minute-of-deuce-and-half" accuracy. In all fairness it was windy as hell, we were on the top level of a rappelling tower, and shooting ball ammo. For tearing the shit out of vehicles I don't think anything does it better than a Barrett, unless it's belt-fed and mounted in an aircraft.
The .408 CheyTac I fired the same day was MUCH more accurate, but they ran out of ammo before I could nail the 1000 meter B-27 target.

3-4 moa is not acceptable for a 10k rifle. It's hard to keep the m107 on the e-type at 1000, pretty rare past that.

3-4 moa is not acceptable for a 10k rifle. It's hard to keep the m107 on the e-type at 1000, pretty rare past that.

The M82/M107 can shoot standard FMJ, Tracer, API, AP, APIT all just fine, the only one the M82 can't shoot is the 750gr AMAX. The M107A1 has only been around for a couple of years but I was referring to the original set up M82 and 107 style rifles. The 82 came out the same year it was designated and the 107 has a few feature changes over the 82 models a few years down the road.
When the 82 variants where made public they could be had for under 5k new the 107s that I remember where around 5-6k. Since 2007 there haven't been much .50s availible in CA especially the 107A1. So my pricing is baised on data from 07 and older.

Regarding its quality and accruacy... Many have said it already, and I think anyone here worth their salt will agree... The rifle you use depends on the mission's needs.
If you're putting a round or two into an engine block at long range, the M107A1 is great. Whether or not its the best rifle for the job is a matter of opinion that will change between professionals, but it certainly get the job done.
Now, I (personally) haven't had any issue with the aluminium, but I'm not entirely sold that it was a good evolution on Barrett's part. Really, being four pounds lighter isn't a huge deal for me.

I went ahead with the Serbu BFG-50A semi auto. This thing rocks!! Just yesterday taking it long range for the first time I hit a 16" x 20" target at 1110 yards on second shot. 1st shot was just left, dialed 2 clicks and BOOM!!! nailed that sucker.

I bought my 82A1 in 1992 and since a buddy of mine had a FFL I got it for the dealer cost of $5700. If you remember them cheaper then it had to be earlier than when I bought mine.

I have an M107A1, no question the price stung a bit, but I sleep pretty well at night knowing I have one in the safe and 1500 rounds of ammo.
