Well I have fallen victim to the FTF_FTE snafu of the .308 178gn HPBT Hornady Superformance....

It was so bad I could not get the bolt carrier back or pound out the shell. I finally resorted to careful prying of the bolt carrier with a chisel.

According to the Hornady web site, my POF 308 with a 20in barrel should have been ok. But it wasn't. A couple of photos to demonstrate:

I don't know what the blue stuff is...

The first round ejected but left a primer I found in my magazine. The second round didn't eject, resulting in the special pojectile crimping on round 3. Also note the firing pin punched through both primers.... BTW, I have been slinging PMC 147 FMJ's out of this thing by the box (420 rounds so far) and this is my first FTF-FTE. I guess I shouldn't have been trying to test long distance accuracy and stuck to plinking.

Re: Another Hornady Superformance Story

Not sure why anyone continues to try this stuff in a Semi Auto, the evidence is pretty clear on the subject, regardless of what they say.

+1

Re: Another Hornady Superformance Story

Yeah...I don't really care if Hornady says "it's ok" or not to use the stuff in x-semiauto or y-semiauto. The simple fact is that every semi-auto I have seen the Superformance ammo used in has shown signs of high pressure and problems like what you are seeing with your POF.

The modest improvement in velocity just isn't worth the potential damage to the rifle (not to mention the shooter) when fired from a gas gun. Now, with that said, there are some crazies around here that swear by the stuff in their gas guns. Those folks can have it as far as I'm concerned!!

Re: Another Hornady Superformance Story

Worshiping at the alter of velocity isn't all it's cracked up to be. You couldn't pay me to run that stuff in my gassers.

Re: Another Hornady Superformance Story

anyone know what kind of powder / grain charge / bullet grain they put into these bad boys?

Plenty of bolt actions listed. Press on with those. Gas guns are and can be picky, point blank...period. Read the IF, WHEN and HOW on the Hornady website. If the weapon doesn't like it...use another manufactures ammuntion and feed the "new pressure curve" stuff to the "there's only one way for the gas and bullet to go" crowd.

Re: Another Hornady Superformance Story

I've seen plenty of problems with superformance in a bolt gun.
Would never run it in a gas gun.

If you wanted better long range performance, you should have gotten a .260.

Re: Another Hornady Superformance Story

Got me worried, I purchased 250 rounds about 2 months ago. I did not know that there were issues with this round. I have a JP LRP-07 that I can turn the GAS way down, but now I am not sure if I should even try. Ben @ JP told me it would be OK but I have to turn my GAS low. 2nd guessing.

Re: Another Hornady Superformance Story

My bad, they are 168 gr A-MAX superformance match.
