I am looking to speed up my reloading process this year and the first place I am going to start is here. I can except charges within .3 of a grain using Varget or 4895. I would like to know which one is good to go, I was thinking about going with the Hornady. My budget for this piece is around $300. Can you point me
    In the right direction? Thanks...

RCBS Chargemaster, although I consider all the digital unit to be junk because I have a Prometheus G2, the CM is the best of them.

Not sure if it's still on sale, but cabelas had the charge master combo for about 320, with a 50 rebate.

Why do you consider them junk? I'd the variance if charge so great or do they jam up? I can live with a .3 variable difference...

I've had excellent good results with the Hornady digital dispenser. I followed the directions for use and found that there were frequent overweight charges. I confirmed that the scale was flat and stable.

Then heard about the straw trick that many users of the RCBS dispensers were using and raving about. I found a nice McDonald's straw cut a 1.5" piece and inserted it into the dispensing end and it worked pretty well. But in observing the way the straw worked I figured out the real trick of the straw is the weak static charge the straw had was making the loose kernels of powder not fall out of the tube very often. So I pulled the straw out and charged up the other piece of straw. I cut it and inserted it and it really works perfectly now.

Tips. If the scale indicates the correct weight you can rely on the charge being within 0.05gr or better. I know this because I dispensed ten charges and scaled then on my 1010 and with a little bit of stat math discovered after doing it ten more times that I needed to give up trying to find a problem with the scale part of the dispenser.

If the scale shows an overweight charge (they are always over never under) I dump it back into the hopper and let it run again but this is rare. You should let it warm up a few minutes, calibrate it before every session and if there are any changes in room temperature. I was also surprised to find that they are not kidding when they tell you to work in a room with no air currents for best results.

Other than this it works better than expected based on the horror stories people have posted about digital dispensers. The best thing is that the Hornady dispenser is a bit faster than using my old 1010 with a webcam and an old laptop.

    Hope this helps!

You know, I'm pretty sure my powder thrower does better than .3, and is *much* faster than an an automatic dispenser.

I found a hornady for cheap and bought it. It has done well for the last year or so.

"I can live with a .3 variable difference..."

Most good operators can develop that level of consistancy with virturally any manual powder measure using most small to medium kernel powders. ??

Re: Advice on digital powder dispenser...

I've been using the RCBS chargemaster for a few years. It's worked very well for me.

Re: Advice on digital powder dispenser...

i had originally purchased a Hornady dispenser, but quickly got frustrated with the overthrows with varget. i couldn't dispense 3 good charges in a row on "normal" and 1:5 or so was overthrowing on 'slow'. I got real good at dumping just a few extra kernels out to make my loads consistent. Returned it to cabela's after the LCD started crapping out and just took the plunge and upgraded to the RCBS Chargemaster Combo. I've had 1 overcharge so far... i bumped the dispenser opening the acrylic shield and knocked a half dozen granules out of the end of the trickle tube.

+1 for the big green machine in the $300 price point.

Re: Advice on digital powder dispenser...

I have the Lyman, but the RCBS is supposedly faster. I'd go with that.

Re: Advice on digital powder dispenser...

Prometheus if you've got lots of spare cash and believe it actually contributes to precision.

    Otherwise, RCBS.

Re: Advice on digital powder dispenser...

i just bought a chargemaster from midsouth shooters supply for $289 and natchezss had it for the same price but they didn't have the other stuff i needed. if you buy $300 worth or rcbs stuff you get a $75 mail in rebate. so buy the chargemaster and $11 worth of misc rcbs crap and you get the rebate

ran 50 or so charges tonight and no overcharges except when i bumped the table

Re: Advice on digital powder dispenser...

I've got the RCBS and I love it. I may have a an overthrow or two but not that I remember in the last 3 years.

Re: Advice on digital powder dispenser...

I have the RCBS chargemaster also, and it is a great unit.I have only seen an occasional variation of +/- 0.1 grain.Be warned though,as well as it does with stick and ball powder,it is a pure bitch to empty and clean out flake powder.
