Well this years Ruger Rimfire Challange is done. I learned a lot of things shooting in the Ruger Rimfire Challange for the first time ever.

#1 is for this type of shooting even a 1.5x4.5x Rifle Scope on the Semi Custom 10/22 set at 1.5x is too much for this type of shooting and a Dot Type Sight is a must for Optical Sights.

#2 is for this type of shooting the Burris Fast Fire III Red Dot Sight is too difficult to pick up the DOT quickly. I also learned that a larger diameter dot would be a lot faster for these old eyes. The last thing I learned is that a Red Dot is hard to see against a Red Stop Plate, especially when the sun is in my eyes and the red stop plate is in the shadows.

#3 bring a hat next year.

#4 is I SUCK and need lots more practice at quickly acquiring the targets and sight picture.

Above are a few photos showing a couple of the stages of fire and of some grey haired old fart shooting my Handgun and Rifle.

Each stage of fire (there were 5 stages) consisted of 5 white plates and a red stop plate. Yes the red stop plate must be shot last. If one of the white plates was missed it added 2 seconds to the total time and more time was added if the red stop plate was missed. Yes you could keep shooting and pick up missed plates but it was actually quicker to just go to the next plate (with the exception of the red stop plate that is).

At each stage you shot both Rifle and Handgun. Each shooter with each gun shot 4 passes at the plates at each stage. All total if a person never missed this was 24 rounds through the rifle and 24 rounds through the handgun at each of the 5 stages. That's 240 rounds with no misses. For the record I shot a total of 277 rounds for the day but to be honest not all of the extra rounds were shot due to misses. At some of the stages I double tapped the stop plate due to visibility as I could not always tell if I hit it the first time so I just kept shooting.

I managed to win a really nice Blue Ruger Handgun Case from the door prize drawings. Looks like it big enough to hold a 7" Ruger MKIII Scoped. It has pockets for 8 magazines on the outside under a velcro flap and on the other side on the outside are two large pockets for ammo and such.

All in all it was a really fun day and I know I will be going back next year. Next year my oldest daughter is going to shoot in the St Cloud Ruger Rimfire Challange also. My oldest daughter was trying to talk my grand daughter into shooting the Ruger Rimfire Challange next year but at this point she is telling her mom no (but I am betting that will change) My son in law is also talking about shooting next year too.

My nephew Jon shot in the St Cloud Ruger Rimfire Challange this year and it sounds like both his wife and he are going to be shooting again next year.

All totalled there were 97 shooters that competed this year. Yes I was a long way down the list but now know what I need to change for next year. Who knows maybe a new Handgun will be in order for next year.

Re: Ruger Rimfire Challange

Where at in St Cloud do they do this?

I know me and a few other guys would love to do something like this. And being as we only live a few hours away it could be worth the drive!

Re: Ruger Rimfire Challange

Without a doubt a good time. I have shot a couiple of them and there is one in Northern Colorado soon.

We might host one in Southern Colorado early next year.

http://www.scapsa.net/RugerRimfire2012.aspx is the web site of the host club. http://www.scapsa.net/location.aspx is a map and shows the address. It was really easy to find, even for this old country boy.

Re: Ruger Rimfire Challange

Actually since the shoot I sold my Burris Fastfire III and replaced it with a Bushnell Trophy Red / Green Multi Reticle Sight (actually bought two, one for the handgun and one for the rifle also). I am thinking the 10 MOA Dot is going to be the ticket for this type of shooting, and I can still use the 3 MOA Dot for our Indoor Bullseye Handgun League this winter.

Re: Ruger Rimfire Challange

C More's are a little rick for me. I tried my new Bushnell out today and the Green is not going to work outdoors in bright sunlight. At the Indoor Range I much prefer the Green though.

Actually today I tried the 10 MOA Dot and the 3MOA Dot inside of the 65 MOA Circle. I have to do more shooting to see which one I prefer.

Re: Ruger Rimfire Challange

i like the concept of the ruger challenge and would like to hold a monthly one at my club.

i think the only drawback is they don't have a reoccurring type sanctioned match (like a monthly one like an idpa, ipsc, cmp / nra match is setup). at least that's what i believe, i could be wrong.

Re: Ruger Rimfire Challange

thanks, i see that now, earlier this year i was inquiring, they only had 1 or 2 each.

at that time ruger didn't have a compilation of scores that pooled all the matches together and gave a "national ranking" type of thing - i don't know if that also has changed.

the 1 thing i do like about the ruger rimfire challenge is that they don't ruin the fun or limit the participation by rules that disqualifies alot of equipment like many NRA disciplines do.

in other words having a light trigger on a sporter barreled rifle puts that rifle into a different class where it is basically at other mechanical disadvantages in that class. an example being a sporter rifle with sporter stock and a light trigger in silhouette gets grouped with the standard silhouette rifles with heavy barrels, more shooter friendly stocks, heavier rifles, etc.

the same goes for the 4 position and rimfire comps the CMP holds.

the rimfire challenge has got it going on when it comes to that.

Re: Ruger Rimfire Challange

It does not matter what your equipment is for the local silhouette shoots. Everybody has 5 shots per seat and there are four seats in a round. High score wins.

TOP PREDATOR

From my first experience with the Ruger Rimfire Challange (that I understand is now owned by Tactical Solutions) is lighter is better.

I was using my Semi Custom Ruger 10/22. It has a Factory Ruger Carbine Barrel that I shortened to 17", had the diameter immediately in front of the V Block Dovetail milled down to a smaller diameter and a Green Mountain Non Vented Aero Barrel Shroud attached to it. It has a trigger job done of the factory parts by me, the bolt has had the headspace set, firing pin pinned and rear of the bolt chamfered / radiused. It is all set in a Archangel 556 Stock that I modified some (swapped out the buttstock for a MagPul CTR and redid the Free Float Tube installing a DPMS Carbon Fiber Free Float Tube on it).

There were a lot of guys shooting other styles of 10/22's, quite a few S&W M&P 15-22's, a few .22 LR Conversion Uppers on AR Lowers that I saw.

As per Handguns I used my Ruger MKII 5 1/2" Stainless Bull Barrel with a Burris FastFire III. It has some custom trigger parts in it and has the headspace set on the bolt. Otherwise it is stock. Next year I am hoping to have a Ruger MKIII 22/45 Lite though. A lot of guys were shooting Rugers of one version or another. Somce guys were shooting Rugers with Tactical Solutions PacLite Upper Receiver / Barrels while a couple were shooting Rugers with the Volquartsen LLV Upper Receiver / Barrels. There were a few 1911 .22 LR Conversions and one guy I know of shooting a Colt / Umarex 1911 .22.

To me the problem with the heavy MKII was not swinging to the plates but rather stopping thus the reason I am thinking about a Ruger MKIII 22/45 Lite for next year. I also had issues with the Burris FastFire III in that at times I totally lost the DOT.

Yes it was great fun and I am looking forward to next year. Not sure if I can pull it off but I would really like our local club to set up monthly matches of sorts.

Re: Ruger Rimfire Challange

I'm fortunate enough to have an excellent monthly match locally:
http://dprc.org/ruger-rimfire-2-gun/

It's a great concept and an awesome way to introduce Jr's and others to the shooting sports. Minimal equipment investment to start, that an entire Family can shoot a match with. Also, minimal equipment and procedure rules. They exemplify the K.I.S.S. principle.

I run a TruGlo TG8360B. It has a plethora of reticle choices and most importantly green:

I prefer the 5MOA single dot for the rifle and the 6MOA center dot for the pistol, although I did go back to irons for the pistol due to shooting non-Open class USPSA and 3gun. I'm the oddball in that I prefer a heavy gun to a light gun. Ruger MkII 6" bull target and NC 20" bull barrel upper.
