Scout Supply Company Stage 2 700P

Here is a 700P that we just finished up. This was built for another member here on the Hide and I thought you guys might like some to see some pictures. The base rifle is a Remington 700P OD Green barreled action and a modified gap camo stock. We trued the action, threaded and cut the barrel at 18", added a Badger Thruster muzzle brake, Badger Bolt Knob, Badger M5 and bedded the stock. Jay at Sport Optics hooked us up with the Vortex PST FFP and the Badger rings and base. Only thing missing in these pictures is the TacOps Stock pack.

That's awesome looking.
I'm excited about mine Russell.

I just hope it has cooled off once I get it so I can actually shoot it!

what's a bolt gun with out a drum..... You never know when.....

He has a sling that he wanted me to cut a hole for. rolls it up and hopefully will fit in this hole.

Re: Scout Supply Company Stage 2 700P

Haha I can only assume that large circle is for a sling but admittedly a drum mag would be MUCH cooler.

Russell, this is the first post I've seen of yours but your work looks to be top notch. Off topic, but do you care to give a little background on your company? It's nice to get to know the vendors around here, esp after that disaster of a TR thread. Your bedding isn't Kryloned and as wavy as the Rockies, is it?

Looks fantastic. 18" is absolutely the sweet spot for a 308(which I'm assuming this is). The title mentions "Stage 2". Is this a package you offer or just clever marketing? I have a 700 action with a pencil factory 22-250 sporter barrel that I'd like to have cleaned up and switched to 260. Also, preferred barrel mfr?

Re: Scout Supply Company Stage 2 700P

While I have not received my rifle yet (should receive it next week), I can vouch that Russell is an extremely nice guy to talk to. His turn around times are very good right now.

The first time I called, I was surprised at how conversational he was. I had only had spoken with "gun shop" folks before and they are typically about as friendly as a moldy turd. It was nice to actually talk rifles with Russell, who was able to answer all of my questions and really "dumb it down" for me considering my lack of knowledge about gunsmithing.

I have a feeling you will be seeing big things from Russell and SSC as the months pass. As soon as I get my rifle and the scope mounted, I'll post a little mini review.

Re: Scout Supply Company Stage 2 700P

Nice looking rifle!
I'm a fan of the 18" - 20" barrels on a 308 too.
I had a chance to shoot a Scout built 243 a few weeks ago. Very, very accurate. I had a sweet little 4 shot group going, and knew the moment I broke the trigger that I'd blown the timing of the fifth shot on the bounce of a heartbeat... it's always the last shot, when the pressure's on, and people are watching.
It was still slightly better than a 1/2 moa group, but it would have been around 1/4 if I hadn't blown it.

Re: Scout Supply Company Stage 2 700P

Thanks for all the kind words guys. As you can see I have built a few guns for guys here on the Hide and they have all been very happy with the work they have received.

To answer your question without writing a novel is, I got into this the same way many of you did...hunting. I have always been a hunter and always loved to have something a little different than the guy next to me. When all my buddies growing up bought 22lr I bought a 22mag. When we stepped up to 300 win mags, I went 7mm STW. I have always loved building nice things and am a firm believer of doing it right the first time. When my wife got pregnant, I designed and built my daughter a crib and solid mahogany dresser that she will be able to use with her kids some day. That is why my business cards say "Building custom rifles to last a lifetime". I would say one of the main reason I started building guns is because I was never satisfied with the service and willingness to help that I was getting with other gun makers. Now had I talked to some of the smiths here on the hide I might not have ever gotten into it, as there are some great guys that are super willing to help and walk you through the process from start to finish. So I set out to see if I could build a gun better than the guns I had bought in the past, and as it turns out I can. I am by no means the best shot out there but every time I take one of the rifle I built out to distance it flat out preforms. I am currently helping a customer load for his 260 and when he did his ladder test at 600 yards he was able to put 15 rounds with a 1.5 grains of powder difference into a 1 MOA group. It would have been better but he pulled 2 shots and they are well away from the rest of the group. The great part about this business is that there is always something to learn and always something new to try out. Though I would have to say that the greatest part of my job is working with guys that get excited about building a rifle. I don't mind answering emails, phone calls, or text messages because customer service is one of the main reasons I got started. I always try to make myself available to help out customers to the best of my ability. I will also say that I stand behind my work 100%. It is very hard to offer an accuracy guarantee when you are working with factory barrels and less that perfect stocks, but I can say that all the machine work will be top notch and if there is a problem I will make it right.

Now to answer the other parts of your question. No my bedding isn't wavy and the only kyrlon I have in the shop is for painting steel targets.

I do offer multiple accurization packages; the stage 1 makes it shoot and the stage 2 makes it shoot and looks pretty.

Most of the rifles I build are using Shilen Select Match or Rock Creek. I have recently been trying some Broughton Barrels and they are very nice as well. Really though, most of the top barrel makers are very close to each other and at this point I am not married to any of them.

Send me a pm, email, text, fax or even call and we will work on the 260 for you. no need to have a gun laying around when we can transform it into a shooter. I have a couple rock creek and shilen 6.5 barrels that are begging to be chambered.

Sorry for the novel

Re: Scout Supply Company Stage 2 700P

Beautifully done rifle man. There's a 700P 308 headed my way, and I'm thinking about doing the barrel chop as well. May go 20-22" though.

Again, great work!

Re: Scout Supply Company Stage 2 700P

I am having Russ rebarrel my 700. Gonna have him put a rock creek m24 contour on it. Called him last night and we talked for about 45 minutes. i know he is busy but he stayed on the line until every question was answered. I couldnt be happier with his customer service and cant wait for my rifle to be done.

Re: Scout Supply Company Stage 2 700P

Awesome job. I'm currently having a rifle built now but will be building another when it's completed. You will be getting a call from me for sure.

Re: Scout Supply Company Stage 2 700P

^^^^

The rifle shown above is the rifle that Russell (SSC) built for me. I finally had an opportunity to spend some "quality" time shooting it this morning. This was actually my second time shooting it. The rifle is a Remington 700P. Russell trues the action and re-cuts the chamber on the factory barrel. The only thing he didn't mess with was the action threads (because he's keeping the stock barrel). He can explain it better than I can. I also had him add a Timney trigger, skim bed the action, Duracoat the action & barrel, add the Badger bolt knob, cut the barrel to 24", thread the muzzle 5/8x24 and add the Badger Thruster brake.

Shooting Southwest Ammo 175 Match from the group buy a while back, I was able to squeak a group out just under 1/2". Shooting FGMM 168 I had a 5-shot group just over 1/2" Both groups are shown below. I am definitely a novice shooter. I'm sure I will only get better with the rifle as time goes on and I become more comfortable with it (not a fan of the HS stock). I really believe that in the hands of someone more capable, the rifle can shoot very nice groups. For my skill set at this point in time, 1/2" groups are very good. Two such groups in one day is a first for me.

Just wanted to give Russell some good publicity. His prices are great. His service is great. If I remember correctly, once Russell received my payment, it was like 4 or 5 weeks until I got the rifle. It might have been less, but I can't remember.

If you are on the fence about using Scout Supply Company for some gunsmithing work, rest assured that Russell does a very good job and his turn around time is fantastic. I know there are a lot of good gunsmiths on this board, but Russell was the first gunsmith I've ever had the opportunity to deal with and I feel confident in recommending him to you guys. Eventually I will let Russell finish the truing job on the action and will let him spin a new Barlein on it. Until that time, I'm very pleased with what I've got.
