I have a DPMS Mark 12 in 556 that I have had for years and never shot / scoped. There's a lot of optics / scopes out there that I know nothing about. I would like to something that is a 2x10 variable power with illuminated retical (I think). Would like to stay around $500.00. Paying less is always nice. Would pay some more if I have to. Thoughts / suggestions? Thanks in advanced.

2-10 is a pretty uncommon magnification range. Settling for 3-9 will give you INFINITELY more choices.

The Trijicon Accupoints come in a 2.5-10 with various fiber optic illuminated reticle choices, you can find them used for around $500.

That would be my first choice, I'm using one now on my 3-gun AR.

I have a 3-9x40 VX-R Patrol mounted on a Mk12 Mod 0 clone. I love the illumination system but the reticle is way too thick for what I use it for, as a range toy. I am replacing it with the Viper HS 5-15 from Midway for now. Ideally I'd like a compact NF or an IOR 2.5-10 (already have one on another gun and love it). Another option to consider is the Leupold Mk4 3.5-10x40 like on the real deal Mk12 Mod 0's, but though good scopes, I think they are poor values for the money.

Re: Mark 12 optic help

I just picked up the Leupold VX-R patrol with the TMR Firedot for my mk12 mod1. It's a great scope for the price (~$500). If you wanted to higher end I'd say Night Force 2.5-10x32. They are both mil/mil and that's what is important to me. I've used and trained with the MK4 10x for years. They are a good piece of glass but I moved away from MIL/MOA scopes and sold them all.

I'll end up with a NF 2.5-10 on mine one day. But for now the VXR is good enough.

The reticle is too thick for me also, but on a hunting gun I don't mind the thick crosshairs. The firedot is great.
