Building an AR10 in .260

Let me begin by saying that if I could afford a GAP-10, I'd buy one

So I have had this AR10 project in the works for years, slowly collecting parts as funds allow. All I need are a barrel, bolt, and trigger group.

I'm wondering what you guys feel is the best .260 barrel for this platform? I have heard Bartlein makes a great barrel and I'm willing to spend some money to get something good.

Having said that, I don't want to drop $500 on a barrel, only to have a frankengun that ends up problematic. I've built dozens of AR15s, most without incident (problems related to cheap parts, out of spec parts, etc). But I'm wanting this to be a true precision gun and am looking for advice from builders with experience.

I'm not opposed to sending a box of parts off to a reputable smith to have it assembled by a professional either, rather than cobbled together hobbyist style by me. But I'm not familiar with any smiths who offer this service (I assume most would want to sell me parts, as the assembly probably won't make them a heck of a lot of profit)

Advice?

Thanks.

Re: Building an AR10 in .260

Send it to APA. They barreled my AR 10 parts for me.

Re: Building an AR10 in .260

send your bolt and a barrel extention to Krieger or Benchmark barrels they will chamber it for you and index the gas port between lands any distance you want, then you can build it your self.
done builds with both of them and accuracy is top notch, the krieger is a service rifle match and the benchmark a 26 inch 6MM
both tack drivers.
hope this helps.

I had Mark Gordon at short action customs put my new upper together, I went with the Krieger barrel too, Mark used all my parts, I did have him get a JP adjustable gas block, he built it and it is dead on too. I have a bartlein barrel in my 260 bolt gun, and love it, I also love this krieger in my ar 10.

Mark Gordon in on here a lot, you could PM him.

Re: Building an AR10 in .260

I was in the same position as you, but I went about collecting my parts all along with the intention of sending my parts to GA Precision, as they had done a 7.62 AR for me before that is a tack-driver that I used in FinnSniper 2008, placing 2nd with my partner.

For the .260 Rem build, I did the same thing, and sent off my parts to GAP to do the barrel work for completion, using a Bartlein pipe. It shoots .4-.6 MOA for 5-round groups with 139gr Scenars, 140gr Barnes MB, 140gr Berger VLD, & 130gr VLD. The worst groups are with 140gr AMAX's at .7 MOA so far. I can keep 4 rounds of the AMAX into .5 MOA or better, but have yet to get a 5th round of the AMAX into anything under .7 MOA.

I will say that they paid attention to details that I wouldn't have thought of, and I've been working with AR's since 1988.

Re: Building an AR10 in .260

From my understanding these two smiths are not accepting any AR barrel work. GA Precision is only wanting to do their GAP-10's. SAC is swamped with work.

Re: Building an AR10 in .260

If you don't find what you are looking for on Kriegers website that is available, you are looking at 7+ months for a barrel. The same could be said with Bartlein.

I have heard good things about JP Rifles barrels, but I can't comment as I have never run a JP rifle/barrel.

Re: Building an AR10 in .260

If you are open to a DPMS pattern rifle and 6.5 Creedmoor instead of 260, Fulton Armory has Krieger barrels in stock.

Re: Building an AR10 in .260

Look into Criterion. Just ordered one for my bolt gun. 12 week wait since I had it fluted and threaded. Otherwise they would have had it in stock.
