Range Report Possibly a stupid question about .308 bullet?

I was going through my late grandfathers reloading supplies looking for anything that said .308 or .30 cal and I found several boxes of Speer round nose and flat nose soft point bullets. And my question is what would be the intended use of those types of bullets? I think I have seen that some of the subsonic .308 ammo was using a round nose bullet correct? I am brand new to the reloading world and apologize if this is a stupid question. Thanks for any information.

It could be 30 cal bullets for the 30 carbine. Weigh them and measure the diameter with a caliper and see what you get. Typically they are in the 100 to 110 grain weight range. They could also be 30-30 lever gun bullets in 150 or 170 grain.

Or soft point hunting loads for .308, .30-06 etc. Especially if they are heavy. I think Remington still makes 'em, the Core-Lokt soft point 180 or 200 grain?

Round/flat nose bullets have value in tubular magazines for safety reasons.

Soft point bullets have value as game harvesting projectiles, for terminal performance reasons.

Round/flat nosed bullets may have value for hunting in conditions where bullets may have to cope wth intervening brush etc., for deflection resistance reasons.

Round/flat nosed bullets are not subject to aerodynamic drag penalties at subsonic velocities in the same way they as would be at supersonic velocities.
