I just got a AICS 1.5 stock for the 300 Win Mag that I have put a Remington 700 Long Action in.

The problem is that when I insert a magazine and try to chamber a round, the bolt picks up the round correctly, but when the bullet hits the feed ramp, it stops and the rear of the round drops and the bolt goes over it.

There is a lot of play (in my amateur opinion) in the magazine and if I hold the mag to remove the play (by pushing the mag into the stock), it feeds just fine. I can move the front of the magazine in almost an 1/8".

I haven't found anything on this in my web searches. There is a video of a feeding problem on youtube, but it doesn't look like a 300 Win Mag and there are no comments.

The mag is marked "300 Win"

Any suggestions? I have emailed one of the US distributors but haven't heard anything yet. My hope is that it's something stupid I've done so that it can be easily fixed.

Load the mag full.
Take a picture of the rear of the mag with the mag standing up on it's baseplate so we can see the rear of the cartridge from the viewpoint of the bolt that would be feeding the cartridge.
Post the picture here.

Here you go.

The round is a dummy. It does have a bullet, just no powder or primer.

That cartridge looks to be sitting about right in the magazine.
If you open the lips up much more, you run the risk of the case head being able to slide over the back of the mag which causes problems.

Since you mentioned the excessive up-down play with the mag in the chassis, I would be looking at the length of the latch or perhaps a long recoil lug that is not allowing the action to properly seat in the chassis as being a potential issue.

I checked the bedding -- there's room under the recoil lug.

As for the length of the latch, would it be short? It appears as though the spring tension of the latch is what is pushing the front of the magazine down; there isn't a whole lot to be gained from the rear of the mag.

If there is not a bunch of up-down movement of the mag at the rear, it's not the latch length.

Next thing would be to open up the mag lips a little bit then.
Just don't go so far that the case head can slide back over the top of the mag.
Since you mentioned that the case feeds UNTIL the bullet hits the feed ramp, try opening the front of the lips more than the rear.
This will tilt the bullet up some which makes the cartridge feed further forward before it hits the ramp.
Sometimes just changing that timing of when the bullet hits in relation to when the cartridge releases from the mag lips will be what it takes to make it run good.

A crescent wrench is a really good way to grip the mag lip while twisting it with some control.

I have a Stiller 300 in an AICS, I had to open the feed lips on the front of the mag for it to feed correctly.

I used a pair of needle-nose pliers, grabbed a 3/4" bite and tweaked it a little bit ( about 3 RCH) on each side, and tried until it worked. First one took longer than the third, as I had a good idea by then.

I'm out of town or I would post a picture.
