Is one better than the other as far as original military ammo cans VS the plastic ones on the market like MTM's? Both of the ones Im looking at do have the rubber seal for the lid.
Wanted pros n cons for both..

Re: Ammo Cans?

I think they both have their place, depending on the application. I used to think the Military cans were the greatest thing since sliced bread. But I do like the MTM plastic ones for some applications as they are lighter and don't bang and scratch other things.

I use the Military cans for some ammo storage needs, and the plastic ones work well for other stuff (like MRE food supplies for storm/hurricane preps).

Re: Ammo Cans?

What do you want from them?

During river trips down the rio grande in west Texas, we use military ammo cans of the .50 cal and 20mm variety. They are somewhat/sorta water tight to protect electronics (which you should put in ziplocks.) Also, they float! Seriously, military ammo cans have saved my ass in a pinch. I wouldn't trust the plastic cans in those situations.

Re: Ammo Cans?

Military/metal ones. plastic is lighter, but in the end the plastic will break over time. what would dent a metal can would shatter a plastic one.

Re: Ammo Cans?

Military if you can swing them. I have some that have been in my family for 30 years and are still airtight.

Re: Ammo Cans?

I really hate the Cabellas version of the ammo can "plastic" for storing ammo. It can't hold the full weight without flexing the lid open on the sides. The Military ammo cans are by far my favoirte for any real weight. Now, since I get the cabelas ones for free when ording ammo, I have found lots of other uses for them as simple storage continers for stuff like medical supplies (spray paint it white and use Red duct tape to make a cross on it) - or paint it bright orange and store my loaner slings etc for the range when instructing.

If you ever go near one Jax Outdoor always seem to have a bunch in stock. Also, our local gun shows always seem to have someone selling these (they have a bunch and only sell ammo cans).

Re: Ammo Cans?

as a side note, the guidance system boxes (about 4' L x 12" H x 16" W) are also VERY useful - come with handles on the ends for 2 man carry and a humidity indicator along with a big rubber gasket that seals them fairly water tight.

Re: Ammo Cans?

Get the metal.
I went to SlickGuns.com and they had a deal over at SportsmansGuide for used ones. I just got them yesterday and they are great, the cost delivered was a little less than $9.00 each.
Can't go wrong at that price.
