Helping a friend reload some ammo for his savage model#11 bolt action rifle. We figured out his OGIVE with sierra matchking 175grn BTHP bullets = 2.277 ogive. We made a dummy round with this 2.277 ogive and the COAL ended up being 2.851. We actually chambered the dummy round into the savage bolt action rifle and it does chamber just fine.

Now my question is....... if we produce some rounds with these 175smk's @ 2.277 OGIVE just touching the lands,,,,, is a COAL of 2.851 too much??? It just seams like the bullet is really really sticking out wayyyyyyy to far...!!!...!!! Or is this fine to shoot? Anyone have any experience with this?

    What do you guys think??

you need to shoot it and see if it's any good.

I still don't know where this whole 'seat it to the lands' thing is from, but from my limited reloading experience with our rifles, it's horseshit.

The rifle will tell you how far it wants the bullets to jump.

was thinking we would start with the .015 jump.... so if measured touching lands OGIVE on 175 SMK's is 2.277, with a .015 jump we would start with a 2.262 ogive seating depth...

While it may not be the best choice in a tactical rifle, there's a reason a lot of benchrest shooters jam bullets. It's hardly horseshit.

To be honest it is whatever your rifle likes, to be jammed into the lands or jump, I have rifles that like both.

And, depending on throat wear/errosion, you may well exceed the max COAL in order to get the proper jump for your rifle.

To clarify, I was referring to folks that insist on running their bullets into the lands without doing any load development or testing--and expecting that seating to be the pinnacle of accuracy.

I doubt anyone would disagree with properly load developing a new rifle.
