Been lurking around this forum for quite some time, decided to become a member. I'm new to bolt action rifles, in the sense that I've never really owned one, but have shot a few over the years. Anyway, I've been wanting to put together some sort of tactical rifle for a while now and after months of research I've narrowed it down to a .308 Remington 700 SPS.

Specifically, this one here:

In addition, I think this chassis is totally cool (not sure which model is right for the SPS 700 - LA or SA?):

My only concern is regarding the Remington 700 SPS - I've read reviews (many reviews) that have said the rifle has FTF issues. Have any of you found this to be true?

If I replace the factory stock with the Accuracy International chassis, will that eliminate any possible FTF issues?

Re: Remington 700 SPS .308 and AICS stock

The FTF issues are mainly from people who don't know how to adjust the mag follower spring. Granted they shouldn't have to it's a couple minute job to adjust the spring and verify function.

Replacing the stock with and AICS you will use AICS mags so the factory spring won't be an issue. I wouldn't worry about it, assemble your rifle and shoot.

I would however spend a few bucks more and get the AAC'SD for its 1:10 twist and threaded barrel. It's only like $40 more and buds stocks it.

Re: Remington 700 SPS .308 and AICS stock

I also agree get the faster twist and if you get the chassis get the folding. The folding is great because you trying to clean a gun without the folding means removing the chassis. Trust me it's worth the extra bucks.

Re: Remington 700 SPS .308 and AICS stock

You don't have to remove the chassis to clean the gun with the 1.5. All you need to do is unscrew the thumbscrews for the cheek piece and lift it out. Bore guide and rod will go right in.

That said the folder does make cleaning a little easier but its seconds to remove the cheekpiece. It also folds a little more compact so it can go in a smaller case and go in the trunk or back seat of a car that much easier. The downside is the folder adds more weight and cost more.

Re: Remington 700 SPS .308 and AICS stock

What the guys above said... For that rifle you need the AICS short action. You may want to try one before you buy, as some folks love the AICS and some folks can't stand it. You will have no issues with feeding with the AI magazines. I know, I had one myself.
I sold mine due to the weight of the rifle. Not fun if you're walking a lot with it. But I'm not fit.

It should improve accuracy with the AICS.

Re: Remington 700 SPS .308 and AICS stock

Welcome to the 'Hide!

I am like you - newish to the sport but wanted to go all out on my first rifle ("all out" as in a Rem. 700 and AICS). That is the noob on a budget's version of "all out".

I love the rifle and have added quite a bit to it (accessories) since I bought it. The possibilities with a Rem. 700 are virtually endless.

More recently, I've been working on a custom build from the ground up. As for your a first bolt rifle, you can't beat the Rem. 700's out of the box accuracy and the sweet look of the AICS.

I didn't see the need for the folding stock, as I won't be packing it up in a backpack any time soon. Cleaning is fairly easy with the quick removal of the cheek piece. You may not need to do that if you have it at its lowest setting.

PM inbound...

Don't buy new... Get one here on the 'Hide!!! You'll save a lot of money if you snag up a good one on here. Lots of good deals and you'll save if you can find one that's had a little work done to it.

Re: Remington 700 SPS .308 and AICS stock

I think I will always have a chassis gun on hand. I really really like them!

Wayfaerer,

There are great 'traditional' stocks out there too - McMillan, Manners, etc... Don't rule them out when making your decision on a stock. I've got a McMillan also that I LOVE. I can't really make up my mind which I like more.

IMO, I do think the AICS is one of the baddest looking stock options out there. And I like the way it feels and performs.

Re: Remington 700 SPS .308 and AICS stock

Well I went ahead and ordered the 700 SPS 308 with 1/10 twist and threaded barrel. Still undecided on the chassis though. How is the AX series?

Looks like a Remington PSS.

I too would pick up the AAC-SD as it has better twist. I missed one on GunBroker yesterday for $500 with a Timney trigger in it.....workin nights this past week has caused me to save ALOT of money!! Gona cost me in the long run though.

+1 I love the feel and ruggedness of the AICS but MCM and Manners make's some nice stuff too. However a MCM is going to cost you and is going to be a long wait. You're looking at a 6 month wait, $800 for a fully adjustable stock, $350 for a badger bottom metal to run AICS mags and then $250 to have it pillar bedded which is critical for the MCM and the manners non chassis stocks.

The Manners Mini Chassis is a good option though. You get a chassis just like the AICS just not alluminum running the full length, badger bottom metal, and just like the AICS its a bolt on and go deal. They offer it in all their stocks and stockysstocks.com stocks a lot of manners stuff. You would need the T, T2, T3, T4, or T5 with mini chassis for R700 SA and sendero/varmint barrel. The T5 and T3 and awesome stocks.

Sorry guys someone just spoke for it

Re: Remington 700 SPS .308 and AICS stock

I second that on the AICS. It's boxy and heavy. I sold mine to pay for a McMillan A5, and I'm much happier with it. Put a DBM on the McMillan, kept using the same mags without all the bulk, and a much easier fore end to grip for fancy off the side of a tree branch shot. If you're going to be shooting brone with a bag or bipod though, the AICS isn't bad. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Longbow_06</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> I know, I had one myself.

Re: Remington 700 SPS .308 and AICS stock

I liked the AICS a lot, I shot one well with a AAC-SD on top. I switched up to a manners t5 for weight reasons. 308win doesn't need a lot of weight imo.
