I've been running a 2008 STI as a daily driver and autocross comp car for 2 years now. Popped the first motor at 32K with a custom map, headers, and full exhaust. It was putting down 298 at the wheels before it suffered ringland failure. Last weekend at another event I thought my factory installed new long block with 8K on it popped again. But the dealer just informed me it was just the turbo. I'm over the motor problems with Subaru and have decided to go the EVO X route. Anyone else auto cross here and run an EVO? If so, what have you done to your car to make it win or make you faster? I'm thinking going Ohlins suspension, custom tune, and exhaust. Essentially the same I did to the Subi to keep it reliable.

Really? Only about 40 wheel hp over stock.... Don't think so. But since your wondering, the shop that did the tune turned out to be a shop that was known for bad tunes and popping motors. Not that they were bad people, just inexperienced. Subaru mechanics also admitted to me that there is a bulletin about inferior metal used on the ring lands. No recall as that would be too expensive but the bulletin is there none the less. Many, many people have suffered the same problem with bone stock cars.

Re: Autocross. Switching from STI to EVO X.

I ran STU until early 2007, 2006 was my last nationals. Everyone was switching to Evo's, I stuck with my 2004 STI. I believed that the greater low end torque, and shorter 2nd gear allowed it to have higher corner exit speeds.

If I had someone to bankroll it, I still believe that I could win nationals again in a 2004/5 STI, and I wouldn't need all those fancy shocks, wheels, and everything else that folks were getting. Knowing how to drive was a lot more important than the latest gear, kinda the same way in the shooting world.

I'm not sure if he's still tuning cars, i'll have to ask him, but Jake Diehl was the shit, tuned my car, and I was running 306hp at the tires and a bit more torque than that.

I've been out of it for a while, so I don't know what cars/tires are dominating the STU class anymore. I stay away from it as I really start to miss it when I follow it again.

I completely understand, lol. I quit racing sport bikes 2 years ago and miss the shit out of it. I ran in wera, afm, and oomra clubs all over the west coast and vegas. Autocross has filled the void for my cravings of competition. When I was in STU, I was running Ventus RS3's with a tread wear rating of 140. Great tires, but my V710's have way more grip which put me in the higher class. The older STI's are def better than the new one's. I compete against 4 or 5 of them but I'm a better driver than them with an inferior car. I think I just want to try something new until Subaru comes out with the all new STI in '14. That's going to be a fun car. Lighter, 300hp, and a 1.6L engine based off a new frame. Then I might go back to Subaru. I'm also getting a new car for warranty reasons. Popping motors would be expensive if I had to pay for them....

Re: Autocross. Switching from STI to EVO X.

Yokohama's were the tire to have in 2006, and Falken Azenis in 2005 IIRC.

I was running a weird setup on the suspension, everyone told me I was doing it wrong. It was strange because they still told me I was doing it wrong after winning nationals twice in a row. the car was so perfect it's not funny.

I know what you mean about running R comps, I ran stock class before I went to STU and the amount of grip of those tires is unreal.

I already did the whole racing team/club events throughout Cali, Nevada, and Oregon on a Yamaha R6. If their were real tracks anywhere near me I'd be on them like flies on shit. Nothing like a real track. But Autocross is only 1.5 hrs from my home as opposed to a 4-5hr drive to Infineon Raceway. Plus I'm done spending a fortune on racing, gonna stick to my small clubs. And I can win using a daily driver as opposed to a full blown track car. Anyway it's all fun as hell when competition is involved. Have fun at it!!!

Re: Autocross. Switching from STI to EVO X.

I just talked to the dealership and my car should arrive sometime next week. White fully loaded MR. I didn't want the Nav/sunroof, but I would have had to wait 3 more months for that version. I'm stuck on a white one, coming from my black STI.

That's ok, the white ones remind me of stormtroopers.
