I'm reloading a winchester M70 in 30'06 for the first time. I'm loading up Sierra 165 gamekings. What velocity should I aim for or what is expected?

I've also got some 180 gamekings to try next.

Re: 165s in 30'06 velocity?

What do you want to do? Start low and work up. H4350 works well with 165's and 180's. With the 165's you should see some good groups from 57.0 to 58.0 grs. around 2800-2850 fps. As always start low and work up, every rifle is different.

Re: 165s in 30'06 velocity?

I did a latter test for the first time. I'm using H4350 and it looked like 53-55gr had good accuracy and velocity was about 2660 fps. But it looks like 56.5-58gr was good also with higher velocity at 2850 fps. I'm going to load up 57gr and see how it groups.

I'm new to the 30'06, I didn't know if 2700 was good enough or I should go higher to 2900, 3000, etc.

Thanks

Re: 165s in 30'06 velocity?

My 165 load for hunting is a 165 Gameking HPBT over 50g IMR4064. Averages around 2775 in a 22" barrel.

Re: 165s in 30'06 velocity?

There are nodes higher up (3050 or so) but noticable recoil differeces. If you don't mind the beating take it up, but watch for overpressure signs. I've gone to double base powders but only shoot enough to confirm coldbore zero and min group size for expected harvest distance. I use less punishing guns for fun/practice.

Re: 165s in 30'06 velocity?

If you want the best accuracy try 50grs RE15 with those 165s, I like SSTs myself.

Re: 165s in 30'06 velocity?

For 180's I run 56 of H4350 for cup and core flat base bullets. They will cloverleaf @ 100 running about 2650-2700. 180 partitions, I had to drop down to 54.5 H4350 for an accuracy node of 1", damn if I didn't use half a box finding the frickin sweet spot. Was to the point that I thought my scope was loose, then shot another group of interlocks sub-moa to confirm.

BTW OP what are you hunting?

You'll find that with 165's & H4350 57.0-57.5gr is a great node. I have personally loaded higher to 59.0 grs. around 2900 fps, but recoil was super snappy. My current load is 57.0grs h4350 with 185's and its at max, warm load. It does 2810 avg, and shoots sub MOA out to 800 yards.

The 06 is pretty easy to load for.

Re: 165s in 30'06 velocity?

I'm looking for a good hunting load for deer up to elk. For elk I'll probably go with a 180gr bullet. Right now I have a bunch of 165's so I thought I would start with those first since I've never reloaded for this gun or caliber.

After looking at my latter test. I decided to go with 57.0gr of H4350. Put 3 shots in one hole, one I pulled, and one I'm calling affected by wind. Those two were 3/4" off the other 3 shots. Velocity was 2820 fps. Next I'll shoot it at longer ranges with my Shooter App to true muzzle velocity and confirm drop.

I've got 180gr gamekings to work on next. I think that would be better for elk.

Re: 165s in 30'06 velocity?

If youre going to use H4350 for the 165s, 58grs is what Ive found worked best, 57grs for the 180s, though I was shooting 180 Hornadys flat base, consistent 5/8th MOA out to 300yds for 3 shots.57grs 4000MR works just as well for the 180s.

Re: 165s in 30'06 velocity?

Nothing wrong with 165's but for some reason my barrel love heavy bullets.

320 yards prone /bipod.

What velocity are you getting with 58grs?

Dont have a chronograph but should be right around 2800, give or take 30fps.

My Model 70 likes 180s also, but it shot this 3 shot group @300yds with 168AMAXs, got lucky on this one.
