Rifle Scopes Mounting a scope

I tried something new today mounting my scope on my new rifle. I had read all of the information here about mounting them so that the crosshairs were straight up and down and my friend said I needed a vise to put it in and level it to put the scope on. I don't have a vice and didn't want to wait several days to order one so I set up a plumb bob string at 75 yards (all I could get for range) and put a 2x4 on top of a couple of blocks and leveled the 2x4. Then laid the flat part of my rifle where the bottom metal runs up through the stock on the 2x4 with the bipod down and sighted the plumb bob string while I tightened the screws on the rings. This way, assuming the bottom of the stock is indeed flat, I should have the rifle and the crosshairs square and straigt. I guess I'll be finding out if it worked when I start shooting some.

Re: Mounting a scope

Not the conventional way of doing things? But that doesn't mean it won't work? My only fear is the bottom of your rifle being flat? Sounds like you may have got really close enough to at least give it a try? Good luck let us know how that worked out for you?

I'm hopin' that the bottom of the stock is flat. I tried leveling the rifle using the base however those things aren't very wide. Guess I'll see how it worked when I test the tracking.

Re: Mounting a scope

Leveling the scope to the rifle is not important. Holding the scope level each time you shoot is. Many prefer the rifle to be canted when the shoot, that's fine as long has the scope is lever and help in the 0 cant when shooting.

Re: Mounting a scope

Use Lowlight's method of a series of feeler gauges between the mounting rail and the flat bottom of the scope.
There's a recent thread on this.
I'm mounting one today and that's what I'm doin.
