168 or 175's for Armalite Ar10-T or National Match. I have an Armalite AR10 national match and I tried 175's (handloads)today and it seemed that it wasnt liking them. I am just wondering if anyone has a AR10 "T" or N.M. from Armalite and what do they like best....168's or 175's for best groups. I think Armalite recommends 168's......but I could be wrong. Also any pictures of the groups you have with ammo specs is greatly appreciated.

I have a buddy who shoots an Armalite SASS, he only uses the 168s. With the old 168 Lake City Match he is shooting 1/4 to 1/2 moa groups at 100yds. 175 Fed GM opened up to between 1/2 to 3/4 moa. Each rifle is a little different and I am unsure of his twist rate which has a lot to do with it.

My fleet experience with the AR-10T (both 22 and 16-inchers) seems to show the 168s outshoot the 175s to 300 yards.

I hit 3/8-1/2 moa using 168 grain Federal Match King with an Armalite AR-10 with a 24" barrel. I get good results with the 168 at distance also. My AR-10 loves that ammo.

168 SMK's are a good bullet, hard to beat them and 175's in Fed. GMM. 168's keep up (barely) to 600 or so but after that, the heavies (175/178's) simply leave them behind. I have an AR10T with 3K down the tube and an LTR with about 600, both like the 178 Amax. Think the T is an 11.25 twist and the LTR a 12. If I wanted more speed, I'd go with one of the long 155's. I'll say it once again, the 168's are the bastard child of the .308 world and get a lot more credit than they deserve.

okie

My AR10 NM has a 1-10 twist and a 20" barrel. I would think it would like the 175's but I guess I will have to get a box or 2 of FGMM 168's. Anyone have any other info? Group pictures?

Re: 168 or 175's for Armalite Ar10-T or National Match

My AR10 NM barrel wouldn't shoot worth a crap for some reason, i replaced it with the Noveske 21 inch 1-10 twist and it shoots everything from 150 to 175 (all reloads) like a lazer.
good luck.

From what I understand, the NM barrel and "T" barrels are the same..... So the guy at Armalite said.

Re: 168 or 175's for Armalite Ar10-T or National Match

There's virtually no difference whatsoever in accuracy between the 168s and 175s, but as others have mentioned, the 175s will perform much better at longer ranges. The 168s were designed as 300 meter bullets, nothing more. The will work (more or less) at 600, but there's definately better choices out there. I'm in the process of building an M110 (AR-10 NM, built to AMU specs) for 1,000 yard Service Rifle matches, but will most likely wind up running the Berger 185s in this one.

Beyond that, any differences in groups between the 168s and 175s at shorter ranges are just the result of how that particular rifle shoots. They all have their preferences, and there's not too much point in arguing with them.

Re: 168 or 175's for Armalite Ar10-T or National Match

Yeah, I realize the differences in 168-175 for distance but I was hoping that there was a "standard" grain bullet that was recommended for the AR 10. I use 175's handloads in my bolt guns and they shoot GREAT, but I tried them in this AR10 NM and they were about 1.25" -1.50 at 100 yards. Armalite said they recommend 168's so I bought a box of FGMM 168's to try....in high hopes they will group a lot better. This was my first time shooting it and I have not shot a semi auto in a long time. I hear that shooting semi autos and bolt guns are 2 different things. I guess in short....I am wondering if anyone has better luck grouping 168's than 175's with the AR10 T or NM. I know all rifles like different ammo but hoping the FGMM work better.

Re: 168 or 175's for Armalite Ar10-T or National Match

Sounds like some load development needs to be figured out... 168 black hills about 2675fps rocks well in a DPMS lr308. I know its a different rifle but its worth mentioning.

My friend also shoots the Super SASS. He shoots factory match Rem and Federal match 168 and is consistant under .5 MOA at 100.

Re: 168 or 175's for Armalite Ar10-T or National Match

I own an Armalite AR10A4 It sports the 20-inch, 1:12 twist, chrome-lined heavy barrel that was standard on Armalite AR10A4's in 1999. (I believe Armalite now calls this profile a medium-weight barrel.)

Despite the fact it is chrome-lined, it is a MOA rifle with 175gr SMK-moly handloads. It shoots the 175 SMK's a bit tighter than the 168 SMK's.

Re: 168 or 175's for Armalite Ar10-T or National Match

Hi all for my first post here. I recently finished my ar10 lower and topped it with armilite 10-t upper, I started at 150grn nozzler ballistic tips to 160grn up next came 165grns, was not getting what I hopped for jumped to 180grn and found good results, came upon 185grn bergers and wow. This is all with cci magnum primers and max load cfe223 which I beleive is 45.1 and rem brass run through rcbs ar dies
