hi i have a .243 and when i measure the coal to the ogive i have a length of 2.260 so i would like to know at what length to start seating my loads at

Re: i need some advice

There are several things to consider:

1. If the cartridges are to be fed through a magazine, the cartridge has to be short enough to do so.

2. About 1 caliber length of bullet needs to be seated in the case to hold it securely.

3. As long as your cartridge meet the above 2 criteria, most of the time, you'll get the best accuracy with the bullet seated just off (i.e., not quite or just barely touching) the rifling lands. There are exceptions to this though. Barnes bullets, maybe Berger VLD bullets and probably some non-lead mono metal bullets may shoot better with a little jump to the lands so you have to do personal experimentation.

i should have explained it better this is the oal when i chamber it just touching the lands. i would just like to know how much deeper i should be seating it

Re: i need some advice

Go ten thou further into the lands and back it out 5 thou at a time and see how it shoots

That's what I would do too. I usually find up to 0.010" to 0.015" off the lands shoots well. I have a 260 Rem that likes them just kissing the lands.

I use a slotted case like this ....

Then I seat a bullet by hand in this simple tool, and chamber it in my rifle. This allows my rifle chamber to position the bullet where it just contacts the rifling. From there, it's easy to seat bullets accurately.

Read about the Digital Headspace Gauge. I designed it to reduce shoulder clearance, but it also helps set bullet depth within .001" without guessing.

The smaller pills I have always found them to like more jump then being into the lands.

Make sure when you do start to load and start out into the lands you work up slow! Find a load that shoots good with no pressure and then work your way out of the lands.
