I got a brand new, trued, remington 700 action from NWActionWorks and had my gunsmith chamber and install my barrel the other night. I noticed that when the bolt is closed (but the firing pin is not cocked) there is about an 1/8" of forward/back play in the bolt, but when it is cocked there is no play. Is this something I should be worried about? My other 700 doesn't have this much play if any at all

This is normal. I have yet to feel a bolt gun that didn't have play with an empty chamber. If you have a lot of play with a round chambered, that would indicate a headspace issue. You're fine.

An 1/8" are you sure? This doesn't sound right. Neither of my factory barreled Remington 700s do this.

I figured it was due to improper bolt handle placement on the bolt body, so I checked the timing yesterday and it definitely looks like its off.

Is there anyone out there that can take factory bolt handle off and move it to the correct position or am I going to have to buy a new bolt

Straight shot Gunsmithing does this type of work.

yep, i don't think there is any way there is 1/8" of movement when the bolt is in battery. i've never seen that much room between the bolt handle and the notch in the receiver even in an extreme case.

can you measure it with a feeler gauge to get a more accurate measurement? pull the firing pin and measure between the front of the bolt handle and the notch in the receiver at the full forward and full rear position while the bolt is in battery and post the difference.

too little clearance and you run the risk of the bolt contacting the receiver causing accuracy issues. too much clearance and you run the risk of unsupported cartridge outside the chamber. i personally try to keep mine .005"-.008" between the bolt and any part of the barrel.

Alright, its not an 1/8" it just seems like it when I compare it to my other rifle. Its actually about .019" of movement.

Wouldn't worry about it one bit.
