Here's my story... SH addiction - check. Rifle ADHD - check. Can't stay focused on one project long enough to get it done - check. Have several unfinished projects laying around - check. Almost finished with one build and then start the next - check. Have more "idea" builds and dream rifles in my head that I'd be able to afford in the next 15 years - check. Always looking for good deals because I can't afford retail on anything - check.

If you're in the same boat, shout out and let me know!

That being said, here's my first complete rifle - I finally finished it... I'm a college kid on a tight "fun money" budget. Unfortunately for me, any new project I start means out with the old. It seems like just when I finished this build, I already had my eye on the next. For now, I've still got it

Here's my build specs:
<ul style="list-style-type: disc">[*]Remington 700 Police [*]Action Blueprinted by Larry Racine[*]Barrel cut to 24" and threaded 5/8-24"[*]Holland muzzle break[*]Cerakoted barreled action flat black[*]Timney trigger[*]AICS 1.5 w/ their new skins - love them![*]Harris Bipod (Atlas came in today - no pics yet)[*]Bipod Pod Lok[*]AI green sling[*]Red Tac ammo carrier system[*]Leupold Mark IV 6.5-20x50mm M1 Mildot[*]Badger Ordinance 20 MOA base[/list]
The only thing I wish I would have done at the onset was have a Krieger heavy barrel installed

I guess you have to leave something to look forward to. I'll shoot this facto barrel until the rifling is gone - then off to get rebarreled.

Let me know what you think! How did I do? Questions/comments/concerns/suggestions for my next build???

I have been addicted and loving this sport from my first long range shot. After zeroing at 100 yards, using Ballistic FTE to adjust elevation, I rang the steel with a cold bore hit at around 400 yards. I couldn't believe the hit when we were just guessing yardage (time to get a rangefinder). The ting was the sound of the beginning of my newest hobby that my wife calls an addiction!

Nice. You will have plenty of fun before swapping barrels. Nothing wrong with those factory barrels. How do you like that scope?

Thanks!

It sure will serve me well (has so far)... only if I don't end up selling it to do something different. I've got rifle ADD bad. If I had enough money to keep adding new ones to the collection, it'd be a different story!

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

Totally in the same boat! I have three unfinished projects and just today decided that I just have to have my first GA Precision build. Been drooling on their web site for a long time now!
I figure if I commit and put money down and then save like crazy during the build process? I can do it, I just need the commitment.
Then there is the what caliber? Anther Creedmoor, 308 and on and on???
I think when you have the "addiction" it is the "anticipation" that really gets the high going?? How about you?

I'm addicted to a few things - gettin' gear, learning/training, build anticipation for sure, and hitting stuff that I can't even see with my naked eye! Coolest feeling ever!

I just grabbed a GAP 308 here on the 'Hide... Should be in real soon! I'm super stoked to take it out.

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

I was just reading Lowlight's rant on chassis systems - and now I'm wondering: What makes a HIGH end Remington 700? Would mine fall into this category?? If not, what else do I need to do??? Or should I start over?

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

Think you might go for a bolt knob upgrade? I haven't done a ton to my rifle, but that was definitely a nice improvement.

This, I would do this before I would worry about a barrel change

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

New bolt handle...other than that it looks real pretty. how does it shoot?

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

Thanks! I've got the Badger bolt handle on another build and I love it! I think that's about the only thin left to do to this stick!

As for the real question - how it shoots?? For a factory barrel, I'm very impressed. I average 1/2 MOA at 100 - sometimes a little better! I nailed a 500 yd cold more shot in my first competition last weekend. Not bad for the very limited dope I have on the rifle and using the iPhone's Ballistic FTE to calculate drop. I'm quite happy with its performance!

I think I'll do the Badger bolt knob and call it quits until this barrel is toast...

Good to know on the factory barrel! Thanks. As far a the scope - I really like it! I don't have much to compare it to though. It's my first one! I went big and skipped the sub $1000 scopes and went for the Mark IV.

Seems clear from what I can tell, but again - nothing to compare it to. I've never looked through anything like a S&B, USO, etc... But compared to my friend's crappy (cheap) 10-40x scope this thing is top notch!

Nice looking setup there

And the addiction only gets worse hehe

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

Nice build. I would definitely look into getting the badger knob...make sure to give us a follow up range report!

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

I am 100% in the same boat. I only have one unfinished project, but, like you, I can't afford to finish it!

In fact, I just obtained my third freaking job to support my gun addiction. This time, I did it right...gun counter at local retailer. Discounts and proforms, for the win!

Bet you've already spent more than the 5K or so a nice used AW would have cost.

Look at the bright side - you've already got the Atlas bipod.

Yeah, I've definitely got a fair chunk of cash tied up in this rifle. I guess it's the price you pay you have to pay for accuracy and cool factor! This gun is a shooter!

Congrats on the dream job! Can't beat that when you're a victim to this addiction bug!

Seems like there are lots of guys here "in the same boat". Feels good to not be alone.

I'd be happy to get a range report up. I usually shoot steel out in the desert west of SLC, but I head to the 'official' range sometimes...

What typically goes in a 'range report'?

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

typical range report?

pics are always a plus
distances, groups(better make sure they are 5 shots), loads, conditions, other little nuances that everyone who has the "addiction" will relate to...
... and pics

by the way, your rifle looks like a fantastic boom stick

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

i have to ask cause i'm in the market for a new stock, is the aics 1.5 worth the money in your opinion and how comfortable is that grip?

I really like it. I have had a Bell & Carlson A5 w/ seekins DBM, HS Precision (700 Police standard, and the HS M-24 stock with adjustable LOP on this...

Out of all of the above, I like the AICS 10x more! On my other rifle (GAP 300 wsm) I have a McMillan. I really like that too! I shoot mostly prone, so the complaints about the AICS "bulkiness" and "weight" are a non-issue for me.

I'd say - definitely worth the money. DBM is a must with the competitions I do an you can't beat AI mags. But if you're gonna fork out 1k on a stock, look at McMillan and Manners too! If you're going to hunt with it or need a lighter weight rifle for any reason, those might be a better option.

If you're sittin in your living room practicing, the grip may not seem super smooth - the part where the stock skins comes together can be sharp. On the field or at the range, I don't notice it AT ALL! I you're picky, a little McNett wrap (like an ace bandage) can fix that right up.

Re: Remington 700 .308 - Tac'd Out

Nice rifle, word of advice from another project collector… The grass always appears greener but rarely is. Shoot as often as you can and when money is too tight for ammo, dry fire.

That is good advice! I'll have to try and remember that!
