Hello,
I have a Rem 700 .300 win mag that I'm getting some work done on for longer range shooting. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good Mildot scope for under or around $200. Something that will stand against the recoil and have good visibility. Thanks!

First, this should go in the Riflescope section and there's not much good for under $200. I'm unsure of durability, but the BSA Tactical Mil/Mil scope is $250 and the SWFA fixed power 6x, 10x, 12x, 16x and 20x are $300 each and recommended over the BSA.

I doubt you're going to find much that will handle the 300 WinMag recoil under $200. I would look at the SWFA super snipers and go from there

Sorry about that, sorta new here, I'm not sure how to move it either? Thanks for the info

Bushnell 3200 10x. Can be found at Midway or sometimes used in the FS section.

$200 is not gonna cut it. Go on the Ramen diet for a while and do it right the first time or you'll end up doing it twice, esp with a magnum

What part of WI are you at?

Anyways you're not going to be happy with any scope around the $200 price mark for a .300 win mag... and definatly not for any "long range" shooting!!!

*edit*
Please don't take my (or most of our) response as "snobby" or anything.

Start looking at used scopes. I think its going to be hard to find what your looking for.

Re: LR Scope for .300 win mag under $200?

I have a center point scope from wal-mart. I bought it to learn how to use the MOA adjustments and it has been a great shooter for about 3 years. I started it on a .22 had it there while I learned to use the MOA then put it on my .308. It held up just fine and is still very reliable. I still use it now on a .223 With that said the glass is not very good quality and I could hardly make out a prairie dog at 500 yd. The tracking on the MOA adjustment is off. 1 MOA on the scope is more like 1.7 MOA on target. But with time on the range I have made a cheat card that lets me know where I need to be at. All and all im not disappointed for a $70 scope.

Re: LR Scope for .300 win mag under $200?

Ok...as has already been pointed out to you above, your $200 budget is going to be GROSSLY inadequate for putting glass on a long-range, precision rifle especially one that will need to withstand the recoil impulse generated by a 300WM and that will serve you at extended ranges (depending on your definition of "longer range shooting" of course).

That said, a used SWFA SS scopes in fixed 10x, 16x or 20x can be had for roughly $250 (or less) on the used market here on the Hide ($300 brand new in the box from SWFA). These scopes are rugged, reliable, offer a sizeable internal adjustment range desirable for a scope to be put to use at longer ranges (especially in combination with a canted scope base), and most importantly for your purposes...won't break the bank. Now, obviously you give up the flexibility of a variable power optic which may or may not be of concern to you, but for your budget, there is no finer optic that the SS. As for the BSA scopes...I wouldn't piss on a BSA if it was on fire!! The Bushnell Elite 10x scopes are also not bad at all for their price range (around $250 new). They have the mil-dot you want and can be had with mil adjustments as well. I believe (don't quote me on this) that MidwayUSA was running a sale on them for $199 through the end of Sept '12. While not a "great" optic by any means, it is a decent piece of entry-level, quality gear that will serve you well until you can get something better down the road. Again...depending on your max intended range...you may want/need more than 10x.

Knowing a little more about what you want in an optic other than: 1) mil dot; 2) hold up to a 300WM; 3) for "longer range" shooting; 4) "good visibility"; and 5) on the cheap...would be helpful in perhaps pointing you in the right direction for any additional optics that might foot the bill for a reasonable price (but remember your audience here...some of us, me included, have $2k+ optics sitting on .22LR trainers)!!

In other words, what ranges are you looking to shoot out to, do you care if the adjustments and reticle match up (i.e. - MOA/MOA or mil/mil as you'll see used commonly when talking about this issue...you should care!), etc. Anyways...just some ideas and things for you to consider for now.

Out of curiosity (and I apologize if you've posted this elsewhere as I've not read any of your other posts that I can recall), what are the specs on your rifle you are having worked on?

Re: LR Scope for .300 win mag under $200?

what work are you having done on your 700? my advise would be take the money you have set back for the work and put it towards a scope.

Re: LR Scope for .300 win mag under $200?

ORD,
Thank you for that great explanation. To be more specific, I originally bought my .300 win for hunting in alaska while still retaining the ability to use it in wisconsin for deer and small bear. Now I'm getting more interested in the Long range shooting aspect and I don't want to buy a new rifle. The rifle I have has a sporter contour and it's giving me some problems with the overheating and grouping issues I've been having. I'm ordering a new barrel (23" heavy varmint) and I will be getting a new stock in the future. My rifle is originally the Rem 700 SPS DM. I'm looking for a good quality cheap scope(kind of an oxymoron I know) to use with hopes that in the future I can afford a better one(probably a few years from now). Another option I would like to have would be parallax adjustment which is something I was suggested before would help. Thanks again!

Ok. That helps somewhat.

If you'll continue to use the rifle (with new barrel/stock/optics) as a hunting rifle, it would be good to know the conditions in which you are hunting. If the rifle is going to be dual purpose for long-range precision as well as hunting which isn't always in wide open fields with longer range shots, then a fixed, high magnification optic (like the 16x and 20x SS scopes for example...or even the 10x for that matter) isn't necessarily going to be the best optic for you and presents even more budget problems since you'll add variable power (and side focus/parallax adj) to the mix. I say this because with a fixed power scope, you'll give up field of view at higher magnification that can't be increased by dialing down the power like you can on a variable power optic. This isn't as big a deal for shooting steel (or game) at longer ranges, but obviously creates big problems for quicker shots at shorter ranges (especially with movers).

As for the SS scopes I previously mentioned, they all have parallax adjustment (the 10x is available in both rear and side focus models while the higher power models are REAR focus only). They will all adjust from around 10m to infinity for focusing purposes.
