Rifle Scopes Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

Hello all!

Pickup up a Rem 700 SPS Tact AAC-SD .308 yesterday. This is my first bolt gun and I know almost nothing about scopes.

I need a recommendation for my first scope and mount purchase.

Budget: $500 at the most $300ish would be better

Use: My range only goes to 100 yards. I would like to go out to 500. I have a 7.62 can on the way, so it will be mostly shot suppressed, but the mount is a brake so I need a scope that will stand up to the concussion when the can is off. This scope will be transferred to an AR-15 down the line, I just want something that is decent for now until I upgrade in the future.

Specs?: I think I want something up to 16x that is 40-50mm. Mil dot reticle. Illumination not necessary. Again, I know next to nothing.

Models I have looked at:

Primary Arms PA4-14XFFP
Millet BK81008
Leupolds and some Bushnells

Can someone help me get pointed in the right direction.

Thanks!!

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

The primary and the millett aren't worth owning. IMO under $500 there's only 3 scopes really worth owning for precision shooting:

SWFA SS mil/mil fixed power 10X or 12X at $300
Midway Weaver tactical 3-10X40 mil/mil at $300 on sale $400 regular price.
Midway Bushnell Elite tactical 10X40 mil/mil for $200 on sale, $250 regular

In that order. I would go with the 10X or 12X mil/mil SS and don't look back. Don't get too tied up in magnification, glass quality and scope reliability is much more important. I'd stay away from the higher power SWFA SS fixed powers (16X and 20X) because mirage will be bad on hot days, FOV is small as well as the exit pupil.

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

Thanks for the input. I really didnt know which brands are crap and which are ok. Where is the best place to get the swfa scopes?

edit: I think I found it, swfa.com? also at the same price, which would be better to go with, 10x or 12x? Is there any disadvantage getting a fixed power vs. variable power scope?

what about rings?

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

SWFA is the only place that sells the SS's. Make sure you get the MRAD version so it will have matched knobs and reticle aswell as the much better milquad.

As far as which to go with its entirely preference. If you aren't going to be shooting beyond 600-800 yards I would go with the 10X for field of view. 1000 is completely doable with 10X but 12X is a little nicer. For 500 yards 10X will be more than enough.

Best bang for your buck for rings and base is the Weaver tactical 20MOA 1 piece rail for about $30 and a pair of Seekins or MK4 rings. For a little more money badger or nightforce. The Weaver rail is a nice rail, it has a recoil lug built in and I haven't gotten one that required the rings to be lapped as long as it was bedded first. Remington actions aren't perfect so you do need to bed your base. Standard/low rings will give you more than plenty of clearance with that 42MM as well as have plenty for later if you go with a scope with a 50MM.

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

I just picked up one of those Midway Weavers 3-10's and there a nice piece of glass

+1. The Weaver 3-10 mil/mil is a great starter option for the money.

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

so its between the swfa and the weaver. i like everything i have read about the swfa ss 10x42, but would the 12X or 16X be a better option. i am sure most shooting will be <400 yards. with the fixed power would 12x or 16x be too much at 100 yards?

from the few scopes i have handled at the local shop i know the higher magnification does make it more "jumpy"

does anybody with the 3-10x scope actually change the power or do you just pick your favorite and leave it? i guess what i am trying to ask is am i gonna wish that i had the option to lower the magnification from 10x(or12x) but wouldnt be able to do so if i got the swfa ss.

You realize those are all made in the same factory?

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

Keep an eye out for a Zeiss Conquest. You can get a new 3-9x40 in your budget, or keep watching the classifieds for a used one with more magnification if you need. Nikon also makes some good optics in that range.

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

I'm going with the SS 12x for a build I'm working on. I was thinking the 16x at first but I'm only shooting to 200 yards. I think the field of view would be too small for the 16x at any closer range, then there's mirage.
But then I'm only target shooting now. What are you planning on using it for? If I was going to be hunting I'd be looking at a variable, maybe that Weaver.

What factory would that be?

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

Check out the nikon buckmaster and monarchs. They have always treated me well for the price. Personally I think its worth paying a little extra for the side focus too. I used to run a egw 20 moa rail, and burris xtr low rings when I first got my 700. I think it was like 100 bucks for both or something. Pretty reasonable for what you get.

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

Thanks for all the input!!

I went with the Weaver tactical 3-10X40 mil/mil mentioned.

I really wanted a variable since the final home will be on an ar-15 one day when i upgrade scopes and I liked the snipershide.com video review for this scope on midway. also picked up the weaver extended 20moa base and leupold prw low rings and butler creek covers.

hopefully gonna be a good starting point.

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

I would buy a SWFA SS 10 or 12X mil/mil for $300, hard to beat and good to go to and past 1000yds.

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

Well I changed my mind.... from the moment i pressed "place order" at midway, I had buyers remorse over not getting the swfa ss 10x42.

So...I called swfa today and talked to a sales guy about my needs and concerns, i ended up getting the swfa ss 10x42 mrad with side focus. i also ordered the zero moa weaver rail and burris xtreme tac rings in low height. can anyone confirm that this combo will work on rem 700? i couldnt find the thickness of the weaver rail but i estimate it to be ~.5 in.

Hopefully the mil quad reticle. You will like it. The Lupy PRW rings are very good.

Just curious why the zero moa rail.

I'm sure you will like that scope.

talked to a guy at swfa and he told me that the 10x42 did not need the 20moa rail. he said that the optic had plenty of adjustment to reach 1000 yards without the 20moa rail and that it would be hard to sight in the rifle at 100 yards with the 20 moa.

Re: Need a Scope recommendation for Rem 700 AAC-SD

when i had my aac-sd, i ran a seekins 20moa base, burris xtr low rings, and a vortex viper hs long range 4-16x50. i really loved this setup. for the money i dont think you can beat vortex. i used this rifle for hunting/range shooting. i am currently looking to get another aac-sd and am going to set it up the exact same way
