Fieldcraft shredding burlap?

Re: shredding burlap?

In the past when I have had to strip Jute, I'd cut my pieces into various sized squares or rectangles. Generally 1-1.5ft x 2ft. Uniformity in strand sizing is not important. After all you're trying to make a jacket made of irregular shapes that will help break-up your outline. Honestly on my last ghillie build I just went lazy and ordered some pre-stripped jute off tacticalconcealment.com

Re: shredding burlap?

I am a cheap bastard and I wanted some long strands dyed the way I wanted them dyed, so I bought a couple bolts of burlap and dyed full width x 6' lengths with Rit dye in varying intensities of tans, browns, and greens (intensity is all predicated on how much dye you use and how long you let it sit in the hot water with the dye); then I hung them to dry out. Next I laid each section across a table and cut about an 1" off the end of the section of fabric (across the width of it) removing the 'seam' at the end so as to 'free it'. Next I took a sharp pointed tool (think small sharpened punch) so as to lift one horizontal thread and pull it free from all vertical threads. I pulled every horizontal thread free from every vertical thread.

Did it take a mega shit ton of time to do this? Yes. The only reasons I would say anyone should do it this way are:

A) You're a cheap bastard that places no value on your time
B) You want a variety of color tones that you are not seeing in the pre-dyed jute
C) You think using mainly strands plus a few intermittent strips, plus veg create more variety of depth and texture and thus look better than just clumpy strips of jute + veg

Good luck

Re: shredding burlap?

Pre-shredded is waaaay easier to work with and you don't need much. Let your base camo pattern and added vegetation create the majority of the concealment effect. The jute, when properly conditioned, will add some depth and texture.

Thanks for the input. I have alot of time on my hands right now since im home for a break from my job. So it gives me something to occupy my time

Re: shredding burlap?

I made my ghillie for my sniper course by individually pulling the strands .I can tell you it took forever and it left more up my nose than anywhere !I was delighted with my suit but I wouldnt fancy doin it again to be honest.I did it for 3 reasons , I wanted to dye it myself,I had access to free burlap, it was expensive on shipping to order enough that i needed.(read that last one as im a tight bastard!)

Re: shredding burlap?

I've been to a lot of different areas in the US and I've never seen anything growing that resembled burlap.
