While at the range I finished the last 338 Lapua loads developed using the 250SMK and Retumbo. Before starting the next bit of load development for another powder I had put a few patches down the barrel using some Butch's Boreshine. The first two or so patches got most of the carbon fouling the next couple patches I noticed came out red. I've used Butch's numerous times on this gun (a Sako TRG42) and all the others and it's always come up blue never red. This was the first time I've ever seen this. It was also the first shot at using Retumbo. Could the red be the result of the Retumbo or could it be that it is just that time of the month for my TRG? Or just something else going on.

The cases were never fired Lapua cases (40 rounds fired). I was using a Lucas boreguide with a gunslick carbon fiber rod, brass jag and hoppe's patches. Last cleaning was done before starting with the Retumbo using the same components. Nothing like this was observed then.

    1) Check to make sure your fingers are intact.

    2) Check to make sure you don't have any rust in the barrel.

Only things I can think of. I don't know that I've ever seen red on patches before.

    Re: Red Cleaning Patch?

Run a patch of neosporin down your bore. It will heal faster!

    Re: Red Cleaning Patch?

Stick a tampon in the barrel, and leave it alone for a week. Should solve the problem until next month.

The only time I have seen anything like that is when I shoot 118LR. It is the sealent used on the bullets, you can see gobbs of the shit if you were to pull some bullets. I have no idea. I would look for anything that is red used in the cleaning process, rod, bore guide, solvent bottle ect.

*Damn I reread the post and its not the bore guide, sorry.

    Re: Red Cleaning Patch?

I suspect the Butch's and Retumbo combination. Why not email Butch's and ask them their opinion. Bet the addy is on the bottle.

    Re: Red Cleaning Patch?

If the only item that has changed is the RETUMBO, I would guess it would be a chemical reaction with the solvent and the powder. Have you tried another solvent?

Good thought. I'll check the bottle.

Have not tried another solvent yet. That is something I will try next time I run it.

The groups shot with the H4831SC afterwards were some pretty good groups for just starting to develop the loads and knowing that the gun is new I'm leaning towards the barrel being in good shape.

Thanks for the help and in the meantime I guess I'll try loading up some 250 grain Midol pills...

    Re: Red Cleaning Patch?

"stick a tampon in it" that some funny shit right there, some powder react differently than others with dif solvent nothing to worry about .

    Re: Red Cleaning Patch?

It's a sign that the GOP has officially nominated Romney. Spoiler alert: Florida's gonna go red. I know. Shocker.

    Re: Red Cleaning Patch?

THanks for the link! Great info and on track IMHO. Albiet the humor was good I was hoping this thread would produce something like the article

    Re: Red Cleaning Patch?

Looks to me like carbon fouling, my new barrel showed it over the first 100 rounds or so, and it tapered off with the copper fouling, now the only fouling i really see is powder

Scroll down about half way and take a look at the pictures of the patches. Look at the top row, 4th from the left.

It maybe that the red you are seeing isn't really a red,but more of a brownish tint maybe?

Great link. Now bookmarked for future reference. The patches were mostly red but there was a little brownish to them as well. Thanks for the help!
