Some years ago (more than ten,I think) I remember I have seen a traditional Leatherman tool with the EOD hole/crimping feature on the plier claws_aside this feature, and the blackening,it was more or less the classic, basic tool, well different than today hi-tech products of the same brand_If anyone can suggest me how or where find it,even second-hand,I will be interested on it_any info or picture about it will be really welcomed, anyway, even if can be out of production,now_thanks to all_

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

I've seen them, but never heard of anyone issuing those contraptions.

They were more to attact EOD Wan-a-Be's.

EOD Tech's had full blown tool kits. The close "issue" EOD knife is like the one I was issued at Huntsville.

It came in a pouch with a set of the M-2 fuse crimpers. Every EOD Tech I knew had several and it was their main tool.

You could use the heavy screw driver blade for digging so you could keep the edge on the knife blade. As you can see, the bottom, or close to the handle is a groove used for wire stripping.

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

I remember it , seem to remember most wernt making approved crimps so many people stopped carrying them. Last I trained with military EOD I mostly saw the new Leatherman MUT. Ive had one of the Gerber EOD tools since I got certified. Havnt crimped with it other then in training just to see how it worked. I was issued the same crimpers as Kraig. But the knife thats been issued for the last 10 years or so is the stainless four blade military issue pocket knife.

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

Tank,

Are talking about this knife (below) replacing the one I carried. Reason I ask my kid (Army EOD) had a crimper set like I posted only had the "camp knife" in the pouched instead of the one I was issued. I told him that was an added knife.

Maybe I was long. I went to Huntsville in '83 as a Civilian Bomb Tech, my kid went to the military EOD in the late 90s.

I had the stainless camp type knife in Vietnam (posted a topic last week about it "The Real Combat Knife".

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

Kraig, Yep thats the knife. I went to HDS in 2003. My LT went in 2000 i think. We were both issued the crimpers and "camp knife" with a natural colored leather case like yours.

I was also lucky enough to be going through when they issued the Med Eng "hand entry" tool roll.

The last few tech's who have gone through (2010) were not issued anything - crimpers, knife or tools

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

Well hell, looks like I ow my kid an appology. (Can't wait for the I Told you so).

He alsl had a EOD Shief knife with the crab ingraved on it. It was made by Gerber. About a 6" blade, double edge, part of on side had a slaw blade. but the tip was flat and shaped as a screw drive.

It wasn't issued but a lot of EODs ordered if from somewhere.

Tried to swipe it but he was watching too close. (Already got two bayonets from him so i can't complain.

Anyway, do you know of suck knige?

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

I believe the knife your thinking of is made by Schrade.

Big long blade- double edged , saw on one side. almost a claw hammer on the butt end ?

I remember seeing it advertised by or in the IABTI magazine. I wasnt a tech yet so I didnt buy one. Now they are collectors pieces.

Schrade still makes a similar knife, but Ive heard its a cheap , bad copy/version. I think they call it the bomb tech / survival knife.

I have a lan kay m11 bomb tech knife. basically a modified m9 bayonet. im itching for a les george eod knife.

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

Yeah thats it, thinks.

Don't want the newer ones, I want the older style to add to my bayonet collection.

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

To All : thank you very much for all the answers! I'm referring FOR SURE to an original Leatherman Multi-Tool,and (but maybe I'm go wrong ?) the model seen too much years ago was a really old version with the traditional fixed (not newer/interchangeable) plier jaws w.additional crimping hole_ (by the way,i'm not a EOD wannabe, only a part-time magneto-ignited biker enthusiast)_Sincerely,thanks again to all for the inputs!_

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

I like military knives (issue type) and bayonets. But for EOD work you can't beat a good non-sparking camp knife like the one posted.

You're not gonna be poking around a device with a knife any way, but they are hand to sharpen you C-rat spoon or a piece of wood for prying in to see what you have.

Good to have a good bayonet too, not the M-9, its too heavy but the M6 & 7, light and great for digging.

Shoot, even for hunting all I use is a 2 1/2 inch Case stockmens knife.

I'm not a fan of heavy knives usless I can haul them in a truck.

I have a lot of wierd gimmack knives but use them for nothing but taking up space in a junk drawer.

I'm one of those "keep it simple and light" guys.

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

about how crimping Harley's magneto ignition cables with one of these... are instructions included ?

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

Wilecoyote, I have one of those leatherman tools. We bought them from the company before deploying to Desert Storm, it was a special order and not available on the open market at the time. Tank is right in that they crushed/crimped the cap, but back then it was a high speed multi-tool. Ours were not blacken, just the regular leatherman with a cap crimper hole drilled in the needle nose plier. It's not for sale, but if you want a picture let me know.

That knife on the bottom is the one I was talking about, the one my kid wouldn't let me steal.

Nice collection.

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

Sinister, thank you very much for the picture!_that's exactly what I have tried to explain since starting my post_ if not all,now I can be sure not have only dreamed about his existence_ I only wonder how one of those specimens can be arrived on a cutlery shop in Venice,Italy, some years ago...and continue to kick me by myself for not having buyed it at his time..._thanks again!

Re: old style EOD Leatherman

Ive seen a few of the large Leathermens with the crimper around the knife sites on the net lately. not what your really looking for but close.

to Sinister : thank to the picture you've posted about the Leatherman, after some months today I've been able to find my black/oxide w.cap crimper: again, thank you very much !

I wasn't a high-speed crab claw guy like the above posters, but I was a combat engineer so do have some crimping experience. As the others have mentioned, the crimp from the old-school Leathermans was not very good and we all went back to using the issued crimpers. Having written that though, my set has great sentimental value so I can appreciate your quest for a pair.
