What Primer for 308?

I know CCI #34 is probably the one I will go with on my 308 loads. But I am curious about Federal 210 and 210M primers. Are the Federal primers good alternatives to the CCI #34? What's the difference between the 210 and 210M? Which one is more suitable for 308?

Re: What Primer for 308?

i usually just use cci#200, and once in a blue moon use cci br-2 primers if I really want to tweak out the load.

Re: What Primer for 308?

210M is a match Primer ..(meaning that more experienced people put them together) but your load is really a recipe-- powder, brass, primer, bullet all them put together.

With that said I use 210M, Varget, Lapua, SMK 175

in the past I tested BR, CCI, etc and I found for my load the Federal 210M gave me the best consistency. However it may be different for you.

FYI #34's are closer to a magnum primer then a large rifle primer I believe.

if you are looking for consistency I would build what ever load you feel is right for the rifle that give you accuracy and precision and stick with that.-- I don't understand working up a load and then "tweaking it once in a while" with a different primer.

Best of luck to you.

Re: What Primer for 308?

for my plinker stuff i use whatever is cheapest available to me (usually cci). but for my 77gr smk 223 rounds or my 168/175 amax 308's, i use federal match. its right about $3 more for a box. well worth it in the long run.

Re: What Primer for 308?

I forgot to mention this is for semi auto. So, I assume using Federal 210M is fine in semi auto, right?

i use it for both bolt and gas

Re: What Primer for 308?

For Semi's including my Garand, my goto primer is either WLR or CCI-200, and my AR gets BR-4's or CCI-400's. IMHO the aditional expense of match primers for semi's is an unnecessary cost. My AR is capable of Varmint rifle accuracy, and for match shooting out beyond 100yd, the match primer makes reasonably good sense.

Slamfires are, IMHO, more a product of improper loading technique than other reasons. The round must ALWAYS be loaded into the magazine, otherwise the design-intended drag from the bolt stripping out the round cannot act to keep the bolt slowed down to within acceptable safe velocities. I have never seen a slamfire occur when this simple precaution is followed.
