Gunsmithing Ackley Feeding in AI mag?

What is needed to achieve reliable feeding on the 308 family of cases that are ackley improved?

I have just recieved a 7-08AI case today, seated a 168 berger to fit alpha type 2 mag's but as you can imagine it is jamming up on feeding. Steep shoulder and less body taper!

I am test feeding it into a 308 chamber, the Stiller TAC30 feed ramp has been notched due to the alpha type 2 mag's, but is only modifying the feed lips on the mag all thats needed?

I know I could go just a straight 7-08, they feed fine, but I know there is a few 243AI and 260AI's out there that are feeding from the DBM and AI mags, so it can be done!

So what mod's done???

Cheers

Re: Ackley Feeding in AI mag?

UPDATE: so I just played with the feed lips, made not much difference..... but when cycle the bolt at the normal speed they do feed in, but you can feel the area where they were jamming. I am using my 308 to test, so I am unsure if it had the 7-08AI chamber if it would feed better than current... or worse!

Re: Ackley Feeding in AI mag?

I ran a 243 Ackley through AI mags (spacer removed) with no problems. I'm not sure what to tell you.

Was the notch in the ramp chamfered?

Is this really an OAL issue?

I wish I could be more help.

Re: Ackley Feeding in AI mag?

Check to see if one of the magazines reinforcement ribs is interfering with the shoulder of the AI cartridge. This is what happens with a .243 AI in an AW mag.

If you have a non-AI round, compare the way it sits in the mag to the way an AI round sits. The rib sometimes is in just the right location to push on the shoulder and render the loaded rounds "cock-eyed".

Re: Ackley Feeding in AI mag?

Mine just needed some massaging of the magazine lips. They needed to be pushed in a little to feed reliably and for some reason to not interfere with ejection as well.

Re: Ackley Feeding in AI mag?

Well Ill help since I have actually owned a 7/08 Ackley

I used the AICS mags that were modified with the front plate removed. That is it. You dont have to mess with the feed lips. To me the AICS mags are the only way to roll. I will say that to take advantage of the plate removed you should also mill the front of the action on the feed ramp to accept the longer oal of the bullet

My specs were a Surgeon RSR action with Surgeon DBM. The rifle fed like a fat chick at a buffet. It shot great too

I wanted to run the 168 Berger. But in the one case the 162 Amax shot better than the berger in my rifle. Also the 162 will not take up as much of the case capacity and IMO you should just run the 162.

162 AMAX with H4350 will work great. I tried Varget but the H4350 was better in my rifle.

Good Luck
