I'm used to my military issue socks from the lower 48 but I am now living in the interior of Alaska.
So my question is what would someone recommend for good thick wool extreme cold weather socks?

Re: Socks?????????

The Army also issues some heavier gray socks for winter use.

I used them in my 19 years with the AKNG, and we did 90% of our training in the winter.

The trick to socks in the arctic is to keep changing them. Every time you stop, change socks. Take the ones you took off and put them in your shirt, they'll be dry the next time you stop.

When you stop for the night heat some rocks and stick them in your boots, stuff a sock in the tops to hold the heat in.

Now you have dry books and socks for your next morning's trek.

I wish I could remember the brand they issued us...They didnt have NSN numbers or anything with civilian packaging and a ram on the label. They worked very well but I hated thick socks. If I was running it was like there always a little slip from the slack in the cushion. I used them but only when I had too. Also just like Kraig said changing them is key esp for me. My body hardly sweats but my feet do like crazy esp in those socks

I have had pretty good luck with the REI name brand socks on a side note I believe rei still offers a discount when you buy socks in bulk something like 15% off if you buy 3 or more pairs.

Re: Socks?????????

Lorpen socks are good to go; they last and resist pilling longer than any other wool sock I've used.

Re: Socks?????????

I have also done well with the Rocky 2-pack socks at Walmart. Usually $8 a pair. They only have them during the hunting season.

Re: Socks?????????

Definitely smartwool
Also look into bridgedale, I wear them in cammies and love them, haven't tried the winter ones yet but have a pair waiting for duck season

just a lil on the pricey side

Pm JHarris on here for the lowdown on socks. Tell him I sent you.

Re: Socks?????????

Hey Cut that was the ones they gave us! Rocky...That was them. I guess our flight went out and purchased them on their own but that was the ones...

Re: Socks?????????

I like my smartwools, but they always seem to shrink. Love Thorlos, just as comfy but no shrinkage. However, I don't think they have wool in them.

Re: Socks?????????

Smartwool and Lorpen. I like them both, but the Lorpen seem to wear out just a little bit faster than the Smartwool. For winter I like the 'snowboard' socks from smartwool - they seem to have a little more cushion for the pushin. I also do layers - a liner sock then the heavy sock.

Re: Socks?????????

I've always used Smartwool, really comfy and warm even in the worst conditions (cold and wet is what the UK does best after all..). Last trip to the US however I bought some Remington hunting sock - big thick green things. Very pleased with them - very comfy and not showing any signs of wear of thinning. Believe I picked them up from Walmart of all places!!

Re: Socks?????????

Smartwool for sure, if I was gonna be out in it, they're what I grabbed when I was there. Make sure and check any sock's material content before purchase, there are many sold that contain cotton, you don't want those. Change any sock often, nothing lets you know you're screwed quite like pulling your foot out and finding your toes surrounded by ice.
I was never one for packing, much less digging rocks out of the frozen ground, but I'm a huge advocate of chemical warmers, not routine use but always on hand just in case, and good for warm boots in the morning, which does wonders for morale.

Re: Socks?????????

If you're buying your own, then don't stop until you find some J.B.Fields 30°Below Icelandic Wool socks.

When I lived up North, those are what I learned to be the best ones out there. YMMV. But definitely worth the trip!

Re: Socks?????????

Thanks!!! I have only been using thorlos for work and they are great but I doubt they are really designed for this type of cold.
