I am trying to trim some winchester 7mm08 brass using a Wilson trimmer with the 243/308 collet...trying to develop a load for a new build. To make a long story even longer, although I know better, I FL sized the cases first. Now they just want to spin in the collet, especially when neck reaming. The collet is designed for fired cases..anyone ever run into this or know any work-arounds or have any suggestions? Any advice/ideas are hugely appreciated, especially those that work! Thank you.

Re: Wilson Trimmer & winchester 7mm08 brass

My wilson trimmer uses case holders. I always size first before I trim, otherwise how do you know you need to trim. I shortened a case holder for my 308 semi auto brass, since I use a small based sizer. This holds my brass just fine. Good luck, JPG

Re: Wilson Trimmer & winchester 7mm08 brass

on a wooden block, lightly tap the butt of the brass case inserted in the holder_ trim it,keeping his butt against the big rear setting screw_ to extract it,lightly tap the brass mouth against the same wooden block_

Re: Wilson Trimmer & winchester 7mm08 brass

Thats the problem, since I resized the cases, they go into the collet so deeply that the case sits deeper than the rear setting screw can reach. The trimmer then pushes the case back against the setting screw and when I try to cut, the case turns. In other words, there is no tension whatsoever in the collet. The collet was designed for fired cases...dumb me..even tho I knew that, I FL sized the cases.

Re: Wilson Trimmer & winchester 7mm08 brass

fl res.is's no bad,nor a fault_ find a longer set screw,or swap it w.a longer, threaded bar,or use a short cylinder of brass between the end of the screw and the butt of the case_the cylinder can even be a cutoff from a discarded case___when trimming, you must exert some kind of rearward pressure on the loaded case holder,of course, because the slight taper of the .308 family cases can help you to utterly wedge it in,gripping it inside the case holder_ (no lube,of course)_

Re: Wilson Trimmer & winchester 7mm08 brass

Grind off the base of the case holder until it fits and holds the brass. The rear end of the case holder is not critical to the fit and finish of the trim.

Re: Wilson Trimmer & winchester 7mm08 brass

Is the screw too short, or bigger in diameter then the case? If too short, then get a longer one as posted above. If the diameter is too big, then grinding the holder will work. If you do grind be sure to deburr the ID.

Never had a problem with the Wilson holder not holding cases, FL sized or not. The FL sized ones do go slightly (0.010") below flush but are easily pushed into the holder with my thumb enough to hold. The wooden block gets them back out.

Re: Wilson Trimmer & winchester 7mm08 brass

Wilson makes a holder designated "new cases" or something like that; it's a little smaller than the normal holder. Ive had to use one for a 204 once, having them same problem you are.
