Alright I am a commercial fisherman and have a need for a rifle that I can use to keep pest from stealing my gear, fish, or bait. Pest can range from birds to sea lions. This is 100% legal so please don't get off topic. They can cost me a lot of money per day in lost fish, $3k on a really bad day. But if that isn't bad enough they rip off all my gear to boot, this can add up to several hundred dollars a day too.

I have been using a 30-30 lever gun, and have tried ar-15's as well as other varmint calibers. I am looking for a semi auto for faster follow up shots though.

The range will be from 5 to 150yds while trolling or up to 300yds while net fishing.

My requirements are:
Corrosion Resistance: salt water environment with little day to day maintenance, once a week is all I can commit to cleaning it.

Muzzle Velocity: have to be able to get the bullet from point a to point b before the target drops off a wave or goes back under.

Punch: have enough energy to punch threw 6-12" of water to get to the target if needed. Some sea lions will swim around the boat a few inches under the water, or the crest of a wave will cover a target.

Capacity: 5 Rounds minimun, first round hits are rare off the boat (standing unsupported shooting off a pitching and rolling platform.)

Has to be able to be suppressed: I have a N-6 and would like what ever I choose to be able to use it.

I have tried using the 5.56 with limited success, it had the velocity and capacity, but was rather pitiful at penetrating the water, even a few inches. The 30-30 is marginal, but the only throw away (boat gun) I owned. I have also used a sks in 7.62 that was great but lacked the corrosion resistance.

calibers I have been thinking about:
243win (AR-10)
243 WSSM (New upper)
260 (AR-10)
300 Blackout (New upper)
308 (AR-10)
7.62x39 (MINI-30 Ranch Rifle)

The optic:
It has to go down to a true 1x or very close, a leupold 1.5-5x20 was too much distortion trying to shoot threw the rigging. So I was thinking either a 1-4 or a red dot with a magnifier.

Please provide some input on rifle, caliber, and optic. Your budget is $4k or less

Thanks

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

Have you thought about something that that shoots bigger heavier bullets that have a fair bit of mass for carrying through water?

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

I would look into an AR10 with a stainless barrel. Barrel, upper and lower receiver would be somewhat corrosion resistant. Lockwork, mag releases, bolt stop, mags, ect will be blued or parkerized steel and not so corrosion resistant. You'll need to keep that stuff oiled as best you can. Something like this http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?it...a0-49488ec48776 Not sure how much punch a .308 has after 12" of water though. Probably better than the .223. For optics, I would go with an Eotech for the type of fast target acquistion shooting that it sounds like you're doing.

.458 socom upper, Rock River may be the only option, not sure.
Vortex Gen II Razor 1-6, illuminated and bomb proof, true 1x. I have a viper PST in 1-4 but 1-6 would be ideal.

Might be over kill for some of your pests but certainly not sea lions. And it'll do serious work through any barriers.

Yes, but I already have a .308 can, and I have damaged my hearing in the engine room with 2 screening detroits and a big old caterpillar. So whatever I choose will run suppressed, and I don't have a .338 can yet. I thought about the .338 federal shooting heavies, but don't want to wait for the paperwork to clear the ATF.

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

What about a 7.62x39 upper on an AR?
I think you would be better served by a 1-4 Scope than a red dot with magnifer.

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

how about a marine magnum shotty with buck and slugs? surely there is a semi with a capacity that is coated or stainless and capable? 5 shot is all you asked for, a slug will punch thru water wouldnt it? buck shot and whatever else you wanted. maybe some of the novelty whistle/report shells?

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

457ww in a copilot configuration then you get the 457,45-70,410 all in one small gun, its lever action so you still have a fast follow up and you can get it in stainless with a composite stock. I'm not sure about down there but the lions up here get damn big so I would opt for a big gun.

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

get a DSA FN FAL, .308 and you can have it NP3 coated for corrosion resistance, plenty of long range punch, suppressor ready and accurate enough for what you want to do with it.hope this helps.

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

I would get a cheap 308 carbine like a DPMS. You can find them for 800-900 so if it rusts to pieces after a couple years or falls overboard you won't cry for very long.

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

Agree with jn_fsu on the 6.8. I would also look hard at the 300 Blackout. It would be a lot handier in a boat. I don't know about a sealion at 150 yds but it would handle the other stuff.

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

Well I ended up with a AAC blackout upper. I have a few boxes of 220gr loads and will be ordering some lighter leads to reload.

Now just have to pick a optic.

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

For a relatively cheap optic, I like the Burris TAC30 1-4x24. It's about $300 at Midway. I've got one on my 9" 300 BLK and the BDC reticle is on at 100, 200, 250, 300, and 350 yards with a 110 V-max going 2150 fps. It hits very hard for such a compact and handy weapon. I think you'll love the BLK.

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

Can I ask what Bullets/ammo you used in the rifles/calibers you have already tried IE. 30-30,5.56/.223, 7.62x39?

The reasoning is that you said the SKS (7.62x39) worked great execpt for corrosion aspect. The standard weigh bullet being 123gr. FMJ at 2300fps (about). 30-30 is 150gr-170gr soft nose at 2200-2400fps and .223 is 55gr FMJ at 3000fps.

I know you picked the 300 blackout but you should look at what work good for you and try to match the bullet/speed as I think that is most of the problem.

Penetration into water: IE. problem ?

Bullet: speed - profile - lenght - weight - and make up IE. softnose,FMJ ex.

To much speed = not enough strait in line penetration.
Soft nose = expansion = not enough penetraion.
Light weight bullet = not enough mass = not enough penetration.
Get the picture

Just my opinion.
Good luck.

PS I would opt for an aimpoint red dot (1-2moa dot). Fast accurate in shooting and easily doable out to 300yd mark.

Re: Need advice for a Salmon Defense rifle and optic

I am used to just running an M14 without optics in my Navy days. the only other that we had manned up on swim call were the M2's which we did have some optics for. I suppose its a matter of time to dedicate to maintenance in regards to your corrosion resistance request. hopefully that 300blkout fits your needs.
