What Case Trimmer do you all reccomend for a 300 Win Mag? I would like one that also can have a case neck turner attached to it. And no electronic stuff. I like the Forster but they only make their case neck turner attachement for the "Original" trimmer and I think its a tad short for 300 Win Mag. Any Thoughts? Also what type of case neck turners do you all prefer? Trimmer mounted or hand held?

Wilson case trimmer, upgrade as desired with bits from Sinclair Int'l

K&M neck turner

For a lot of stuff I use a Giraud unit that does trim/chamfer/deburr all in one pass, but its rather spendy. The Wilson listed above is about as precise and perfect as they get. You do have to buy a different case holder for each cartridge (excepting common 'families' like .243 Win/ .260 Rem/ .308 Win).

I'd picked up parts of a Forster outside-neck-turner with the intention of setting up something in a drill press for faster bulk operations. To my mind, being used to the K&M turner where the markings on the adjuster are in 0.0002" and its really easy to dial in a fraction of that and sneak up on a desired dimension... the Forster was like cutting with a chainsaw. Very coarse adjustments, no expander mandrel system so the fit between pilot and case neck is fairly sloppy as well. NOT recommended.

YMMV,

Monte

Re: Case Trimmers

If you find a way to purchase the Giraud, you will ask why you waited so long to get one.

Re: Case Trimmers

I am using the Forster 3 in 1 case mouth trimmer. It was a last shot effort before buying a Giraud. I could not be happier. It has cut my reloading time by over 50%. I had to buy the longer base for my .300WM cases but that cost like $16 so I am into the whole deal for less than $150. It does a beautiful job trimming +/- .001" on brass length while chamfering inside and out. I hooked up my hand drill to it and as fast as you can load them, you can trim them. Good luck.

Re: Case Trimmers

my dad has used a forster for as long as i can remember and is really happy with it and for that reason when i started reloading i bought one and i can see why he uses it. i really like it and it's easy to use, as for the base length for 300 winmag i can't speak for that as i use it for 308

Re: Case Trimmers

entry level press or hand drill mounted TRIMMERS designed around Lee system can be fast, but their use and repeatable cutting depth are tied to the standard, fixed cutting depth of the Lee inner pilot,in my experiences_ I have tried Forster and Wilson : I don'like my Forster bench mounted trimmer_ Bench mounted Wilson is far better, but the blade tend to dull a little bit fast_ If you're really referring to neck TURNERS :no, no benefit to try to speed up on a (drill)press a (hopefully) more accurate hand work_on a REAL lathe,it's another matter,of course_

Re: Case Trimmers

I never dreamed I'd use the Lee trimmer. It's inexpensive, plastic, but it works for what it's intended to do. Case length is consistent. I hope Lee produces a metal version some day.

Re: Case Trimmers

I use an RCBS trim pro with the 3-way cutter head. I am weird though, I have an OLD Lee competition reloading setup, I use the INSIDE neck trimmer. Much more uniform than the RCBS and K&M outside trimmers I used. Only downside is it is not adjustable, but it turns out great so I don't care....

BTW I set up the RCBS with my cordless drill (cheapo I bought just for this) and it Really speeds up the process.

Re: Case Trimmers

My Forster setup will turn my 300 Win Mag cases, but I had to buy the longer base to attach the collet, and trimmer ends onto. You are correct that the standard one is a little too short to work well.

I have mine set up so it turns the outside case neck and trims to length in the same operation.
