Ok, so I was searching the web and I came across someone asking a question about max effect range for a scope and a round on man sized targets, and you guys gave him a really rough time. So, being a ex jar head ( read no so bright  ) , I just have to ask the same question on my first post.
But, let me first qualify what I am about to ask. I have shot a m16 and a m249 saw a bit, and love the weapons, but prefer the power and range of 30 cal rounds. I just got my first m1a, and have always been a iron sight kind of guy.
I know I can hit a man sized target while in the prone at 500 m, why? Well, ever rifle qual I ever did with a m-16 involved a 500 m distance and man sized targets. Further, it seems pretty easy to hit at 700 to 800 meters with a m249, using the bipods, and a nice 5 to 7 round burst, again on a man sized target.

So, I have a new SA m1a scout, just got a military butt-plate, a gg&g bipod, a tac pro riser, but no scope yet. It is a scout so I want a scout config ( read eer scope)
I will be using high rings (weaver see through) I machined them out at work so they don’t block my irons.
I was looking at a 1.5-5x33 leupold vx-r, but I never shoot with a scope.

So, let me ask at what range do you think I can employ a 1.5-5x33 leupold vx-r scout scope at to hit a piece of paper about 6’ x 2.5’ wide aiming center of mass.

Trying to decide if I spend 600 bucks or stick to my irons.

Re: first post not a scope guy - need advise

Ok, I guess I should ask did I screw up going with a scout, or should I not go with a scout optics set-up.

I know no one rifle will do everything, but I am going for one that will do most.

I want something I can use close up, and can push out to 700 or 800 meters if need be. I don’t expect sub moa from a battle rifle.

I like the scout concept for 200-300 meter ranges, but want an optic I can hit at 700 to 800 meters with getting a little better shot placement than irons.

Again, I am not talking about 2” groups, 90% hits at 800 meters would be acceptable, that is why colt made repeating weapons.
Should I tank the scout eer scope idea, and go with a traditional scope?

I just refuse to cover my irons, and I hate to cover my breach and stripper clip guide.
