If Chuck can't do it with that much chest...upper body...hair then I don't think the beard is going to make the difference.

I have heard that Bruce Lee refused to fight Helio Gracie. If I remember the story correctly, there was something about a standing $100,000 for anyone who could beat Helio. "The Gracie Challenge" Does anyone have more details? I would like to hear them.

The Gracie Challange is what started the UFC. Would have been an interesting fight. Fighting styles were so one dimensional back then BJJ had a great advantage, in that it could neutralize an opponents ability to strike by going to the ground and capitalize on his lack of knowledge of ground game. Which is why the gracies were able to do so well, and also why they don't do as well anymore with the progression of MMA. There is no such thing as a purist competitive fighter anymore (in the MMA world).

All that being said they were both purist fighting artist and it would have been interesting. I've always enjoyed watching different fighting styles clash.

If I'm not mistaken Bruce lee is considered the father of mma because of his blending of martial art styles. That was thought to him by his instructor IP. I don't think he did much grappling though

I really like Bruce's stand up stuff, but any decent high school wrestler would have grounded n pounded him. He probably would have learned from it and moved to Brazil, though.

I think his emphasis on footwork and distance control make JKD (what Bruce was actually doing, not the stuff that has come along since) an excellent stand-up compliment to BJJ.

From the little I know about Bruce Lee, he didn't need to grapple. He pretty much kicked and punched people into submission.

This is what a lot of people over look. If you can't get close to the person you're fighting, you can't take them to the ground.

My actual experience is: This is what a lot of people over look, if he is close enough to hit me, I am close enough to clinch him.

Also, if you look at some of Bruce's later stuff, he was starting to look harder at grappling, because he got his ass handed to him by a couple different grapplers.

I think he grew out his back and chest hair just for that fight!
