I've been traveling 45 minutes, one way, to my gun club to do load work up and this is getting old. Is there a quality hand press or portable press, for seating bullets, that would be recommended? Thanks

Re: Hand or portable bullet seater

I use a Sinclair Arbor press. It's a good quality tool.
For dies, you can't go wrong with Wilson hand dies.

What they said; in spades!

don't worry about the brand of arbor press, they all work good enough, but I am partial to Wilson hand dies.
For instance, they are machinable and you can use the same finishing reamer on a blank die as you use to chamber your barrel and that's what I do all the time. Can't be beat, in my book. BB

I use a RCBS Partner Press at the range for resizing operations, and I seat bullets with a arbor press Wilson Seaters, I clean cases with a Krazy Klothe, and I weigh out powder charges with my Gen2 Prometheus and keep the indivual charges in vails about the size of 35mm film canisters, masking tape on top with the charge weight written on it.

Re: Hand or portable bullet seater

Be careful with the hand dies. I have found that it is a difficult task to get consistent OAL using those dies without using an arbor press of some type. It is really hard to get muscles and ligaments to put the same stress on the die each time. You REALLY need a hard press to get consistency. Read 427 Cobra's post. He has the right equipment. The RCBS press will do you good with minimal weight. JMHO

It might be too late now but I was going to add that you may want to consider using (buying) the Wilson bullet seater with the micrometer top in stainless steel. Yes, it is a whole lot more expensive but I think it's worth it (for me). Because S.S. is much more rust and corrosion resistance which means a lot less worry about storage (yeah, I know, grease or oil it when done using, but still just in case). And the adjustable dial type micrometer top is very convenient for adjustments especially if you want to vary the seating depths during load devolpment. And, yes, I know one can use shims and other methods for setting the seating depth also, but the micro top is for me.
