I'm in the final stages of planning out a new set of furniture for my home and I thought I'd crowd source a little. I'm an unabashed fan of arts and crafts furniture, and I get that not everyone is. I need a little help picking between variations of a mission style settle. One is more of a Gustav Stickley design from the turn of the 20th century and the other is an L and JG Stickley design of closer to 1910. And one is a design that incorporates some of the features of both. I fancy one more than the others but I won't say.
This is the G. Stickley

And a sort of hybrid with wrap around arms.

Just need a little push towards whic one to base my own plans on. I'm building two settles and matching chair from red oak or possible ash if I can find a yard with 8/4 ash at a reasonable price. I welcome any and all opinions and advise.

Re: A little help with furniture.

Put your favorite pair of bedazzled metrosexual jeans on and stand next to them both in the mirror. If that doesn't work, put on your pink shorts, loafers w/ no socks, lime green polo, light blue cotton cardigan tied loosely around your neck; and get five of your closest metrosexual friends to 'go shopping' together. Call it a girls' day out.

Who gives a shit about a couch? We're here to talk sticks, wind, reloads, and 1st round hits at a distance.

I like them both. It would depend on the surroundings. to me the top one aims toward warm , like in front of a cozy fireplace in the study. The lower one leans more towad open spaces...mabey a high ceiling and open rafters.

Thats just my sensitve, lavender tinted, opinion. Between the two Id go with the red oak or white oak. I wish I had the wood working skills to build one. I have a small supply of antique, air dried, Brazilian rosewood. The bases for the amps in the photo are made out of it. Have fun,

Re: A little help with furniture.

Furniture's beauty (or lack thereof), like women, cars, rifles, etc., is mostly in the eye of the beholder. Of the three "options"/"variations" you posted, and for what its worth, I most prefer the straightforward, simplistic lines of the Gustav Stickley styling.

That said, most of the furniture in my dining room and adjoining living room is mission style in red oak (although Stickley is rolling over in his grave with people calling his work "mission style"). It is unlike the styles your posted in your original post, but my furniture is closest to the Gustav Stickley pieces. Mine differs inasmuch as the slats on the side/back of pieces are narrower at only around 4.5-5" or so and greater in number than the wider/fewer slats of the piece pictured first above.

I like this ^^ one better in terms of comfort but it looks cheap.

This one looks more 'form over function' (i.e. uncomfortable.) but looks more refined.

However, I think each could have a place in the right room with the right surroundings.

^^This one looks a lot like the first one so you'd have far less work if you to chose that one to base your design off of but like I said, I think the first design looks cheap, like something you would get at American Furniture Warehouse.

Re: A little help with furniture.

A good bit of the furniture in our home is Stickley. We have the sofa in the L & JG Stickley style. While a very nice piece of furniture, it is not all that comfortable. It's fine for sitting up straight and reading a book, but it's not your kick back in the couch, watch a movie or a ballgame type IMHO. That's where my big puffy couch come in

Re: A little help with furniture.

Well on a positive note Ianahes to finally get my 6.5 *55 mounted and zeroed jut the way I want it .... 1/2 inch group at 100 ...

Probably old age but I couldn't get bored with that ... Love it ! Only. Right it out to 400 but damn I'm very happy

Oh shit ... The couch .... Yeah emmmmm , get Naked pics of a 25 years old blonde and see if the coir scheme works ...

Re: A little help with furniture.

That Mission style always looks good...most our stuff is modeled after that. Yellawood has tons of plans, and JUST sent out a new plan for a day bed that looks exactly like that couch. Just remember though, stains come in light brown, medium brown, dark brown. All that cherry, lavendar oak mist, that wimmins stuff. Same thing about our colors of red, yellow, orange, green, blue, and purple. 6 simple colors that can be light or dark. Wimmins and metro boys, well they have funny names for every single shade in between those to include different names for those too.
Really though, If you have the skills, do the Yellawood thing...

one of these days I am going to build my Adirondack chairs...when I get the skills up. Right now I can do a damn good fence post

Re: A little help with furniture.

I think I'm just going to use Norm Abrams plans and tweak the size to my living room. It's pretty simple, but it also comes with detailed instructions.
