I just picked up a used Remmy 700, 22-250, bull barrel, and a decent wood stock....

It has some rust spots on the barrel, I have tried lightly rubbing with oil, and steel wool... No success..

Any suggestions on where to start with this weapon?... and what is recommended...Please and Thanks..

what kind of finish does it have?

Re: Need advise... New weapon needs work...

What's your goal with the rifle? If its just utility and you want a more robust finish, ship the barreled action off to someone like ARP here on the hide to have it Cerakoted.

If you are thinking about having other work done on the rifle ( for example a new barrel ) just wait and have it refinished then.

Re: Need advise... New weapon needs work...

If there are rust spots on the surface metal of the rifle...it is very possible that there are rust spots in the bore (or other internals of the rifle) that you should look for before you pour any money into what might ultimately be a pit depending on your intentions with the rifle. Before you get to far into worrying about the appearance, I'd have the rifle checked out by a reputable smith and then go from there, or at a minimum, go through it with a fine-tooth comb on your own if you are comfortable with the disassembly/reassembly of the rifle. Beyond that, before you get all hopped up on how it looks, HOW DOES IT SHOOT?!?! If the inspection goes ok, shoot it a bit and get and idea of what its capable of before you proceed. If she's a keeper, might be worth a trip to the shop to be cleaned, blasted, and then cerakoted (or other finish of your liking).

That said, you said you tried oil and steel wool without success, but you didn't say what kind. If you haven't yet, try some basic rem oil and #0000 steel wool. It should remove rust and leave the original finish intact unless you go nuts on it. Beyond that, there are numerous other "home remedies" that you can try. Run a search here using the search engine linked to in my sig line for "rust removal" and you should have some good reading to get through at your leisure.

Good luck and welcome to the Hide!

Re: Need advise... New weapon needs work...

I would begin with going to a range and putting a round in the chamber (I'd recommend 22-250) and see how she shoots.

Seriously though I'd worry about the internals before the external. You can always cerakote the outside, haha.

Re: Need advise... New weapon needs work...

as far as finish.. I just want something that is durable and is not pron to rust fast... I will reassemble it and put some rounds down range.. If it is good to go I would like to make it a quality weapon and one very accurate.... To answer the previous question about the current finish, it has a matte black....

What is the price range I am looking at to "refinish" this weapon, (Externally) as far as the barrel finish?...

Again THANKS for all the help!!

Prices will vary a good bit depending on the shop that does the work for you and the finish (type and color pattern) you select. I'd budget somewhere around $200 or so for a complete barreled action, single color cerakote refinish (I'd go with cerakote if it were mine)+S&H both ways if the shop you chose isn't local to you. Again...ballpark figure only. YMMV! There are a few different outfits offering custom refinishing work here on the Hide (back to the search engine I mentioned above) including but not limited to CCA (Controlled Chaos Arms). Track down those folks and inquire about pricing depending on what all you want done.

Re: Need advise... New weapon needs work...

Where are you located, some people may be able to direct you to a local shop that can Cerakote it for you.

Re: Need advise... New weapon needs work...

I would go with the original wood and blue finish if it's just a hunting rifle. If you are using this as a truck gun then I wouldn't worry too much about the rust. If you catch it early, and there isn't any pitting, you can prevent further damage both inside and out.

I would recommend a good cleaning inside and out with WD-40 or Ballistol, and then look down the barrel. If you see any rust inside the barrel ... how bad is it, or is there any at all?

Birchwood Casey makes some good products for the home gunsmithing hobbyist that can be used to turn an old 'beater' into a decent looking gun. For instance... I turned an old 1980's Remington 700 that I picked up at a local pawn shop for $150 from a beat up truck gun to a decent looking rifle in a weekend.

Fortunately, depending on the date and make of the gun, you probably have a better barrel on that old Remmy than a rifle that was made in the past 6 years. There used to be a thing with Remington known as 'Quality in Materials'.

Post-2006 Remingtons have the $20 barrels on them, as opposed to, the earlier models with the $80 to $100 barrels on them with better attention to detail. Keep in mind ... an $80 barrel in 1990 was equivalent to a $200+ barrel today.
