This has probably been discussed else where but I am fixing to build a 308 bolt gun. Want at least a Remington varmint weight barrel. What brand barrel would y'all recommend and what length. This will be my go to shtf long range bolt gun. Im going to build the 308 winchester because of the popularity of the cartridge and the availability of ammo and reloading components. Suggestions would greatly be appreciated. What stock would you guys recommend? I like the HS precision stock that they used to put on the varmint 700's and 700 police rifles.
Thanks

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

Rock Creek
Bartlien
Krieger
Schneider
Obermeyer
Broughton
Benchmark

22" to 26"

1/10 - 1/11.25 - 1/12 twist

If YOU like the HS Precision stock, it'd be easy to find a nice used one.
Myself personally would go to McMillan or Manners.

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

most barrels Kreieger, Bartlien, etc are all going to be great barrels.

Length? Well that is kind of up to you. anything between 20" and 24" will be the average. For every inch you cut off the barrel you should see a drop of 30 - 50 fps/inch.

Definitely want a 1:10" twist. 1:11 is fine and so is the 1:12.

People will tell you that all you can run out of a 1:12 twist barrel are 180 gr bullets or less. The faster your twist is the heavier the bullet you can run. Well this is some what true. It really is determined by the length of the bullet not the weight. The longer the bullet is the faster you are going to have to spin it. Of course longer bullets, in general, weigh more. But in the terms of twist rate it is not about the weight of the bullet, it has more to do with the length of the bullet. It is better to over spin a bullet than to under spin it. So, if it were my barrel and I was going to use it for what you are intending on its use, I would opt for the 24", 1:10" twist.

With all that said, you are still going to have to find the round and recipe that your gun likes. My Surgeon likes the Berger 175 OTM's. I am running a 24" Krieger and I am getting 2728 fps. My groups are sub 1/2 MOA.

One other item. The 1:10" twist will allow you to run the longest of 30cal bullets that are on the market today.

HS-Precision I personally would not opt for. Great stock, don't get me wrong here. It is that their customer service leaves something to be desired. Bell & Carlson, McMillan, Manners, Accuracy International is the way that I'd go. More money? Yes. But their service after the sale is second to none.

Please understand, HS-Precisions are great stocks and will serve you well. I am just sharing some of my experiences with them and what I have seen from other people who have bought their stocks.

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

The stock doesn't have to be a HS Precision. I just like the style of stock that I mentioned. What do you think about the Bell and Carlson stocks? I was thinking either a 1in10 or 1in11.25. I am looking at the Schneider barrels that was mentioned earlier. If they are good enough for the USMC they are good enough for me.

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

Bell and Carlson's are great stocks. I had one on a 308 Remington and I loved it. Very well built. The model that I had was the 2956 Remington Light Tactical. Personally, I like a stock with a button hook on the stock. This allows you to manipulate the stock with your non-trigger hand and it rides a sand sock better with the button hook.

I have the same Bell & Carlson stock.

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

850-900 realistic. I shoot my 308 that I have now out to 1000 on a regular basis and I am confident at that distant. But in field conditions I would not expect max effective range to be the same as range conditions. Just wondering why you asked this question. If its to help with build. Information will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

I am looking to either buy a new custom, or rebarrel my R700 to a 24" 1:11.25. I dont have a desire to send anyting over 180g through a 308, i want to be able to send 175/178 out to 1000 (max distance I can shoot on a regular basis). I have a 20" now, and i think its great for 800 or closer, just runs out of gas going past that, so in my eyes a 24" is going to be the ticket.

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

Schneiders are great barrels but they are kinda high. You can find all the top barrels on military SWS. Hart, Krieger, Broughton, Rock, Bartlein. They are all the same. I would start with specs then decide on a manufacturer.

I say 22 for the length and all of the stocks are capable of 1/4 minute accuracy. The manner and Mac are more durrable but I have no problem getting 1/4 minute out of my HSP's.

I asked cause if 600-650 max realm i'd suggest doing a 16 inch like the bieber, you mentioned SHTF type rifle and the shorties are where its at for a all around carry/pack gun. can still shoot really well just not out to the 800 plus ranges, thats why i asked

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

I got ya. I am going to start with a 26 inch barrel and if its just too long I can cut it off. Its just so dang hard to add length to one thats too short. Thanks for the input. I will keep that in mine. Any of you have any experience with the Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle? I know its off topic of my build but it looks like it would be a great grap and go gun.

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

There was a thread on it a while back. Personnally I would go with a good AR for that but thats another ball of wax.

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

Why don't you just buy a Rem 5R w/24" barrel? ...HS Precision stock, Rem heavy varmint contour, etc. They are shooters, mine shoots 3/8" groups with FGMM.

Re: 308 build barrel questions.

I don't know what you plan on spending for this thing, but if you're going to get top notch everything it's going to cost you.
I would suggest getting a Savage action and putting on a Criterion barrel($280) yourself with a one time investment in tools. I got the tools and the barrel for $430 and it shoots great.
Call Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply 763/682-4296 and he can sell you the action, barrel, tools and answer any questions you have.
