Help me spec my AR

I just picked up a Stiller lower yesterday, figuring I had better get an AR while I still can. Planning on a VLTOR upper, but after that, still putting it together in my head.

Kinda trying to build a 'tweener. Accurate enough for distant coyotes, but portable enough for cleaning house. #1 priority for me is rock solid reliability, after that, precision followed by handiness.

Thinking about a medium weight 18" or 20" barrel, with 8" twist. I want a free floating forend, but not rifle length. Does anyone make a medium length free float forend with some picatinny, but not completely covered in it?

Probably just going to run an A2 buttstock.

Going to run a low powered variable, in the 1-4 range. I see lots of mounts and was wondering why I couldn't just run rings directly on the upper. What am I missing there?

Also thinking I'm going to go with a Geissle trigger.

All this stuff is subject to change based on recommendations of the learned.

Your thoughts?

Re: Help me spec my AR

John, you are right about the mount/rings. I just got rid of my QD mounts, never swapped scopes/NV scopes, didn't need the QD feature. AND, a nice set of rings is probably a lot less than a QD mount.

If you need some cant built in for long range, go with a mount.

Rings work fine.

Re: Help me spec my AR

Thanks for the reply. Do rings by themselves allow the scope to be mounted far enough forward for good eye relief and still provide good support on the scope?

Thanks,

John

I second the Midwest Industries forearm. I had a Yankee Hill and just returned it to Midway. Also, note that the YHM does NOT come with the mount hole for a sling stud anymore, but the MI does have a QD socket on the rail piece that comes with it.

It's also pretty close to what I have in mind.

Just put the Yankee Hill on my AR and have received a bunch of compliments about it. just my 02

Re: Help me spec my AR

If you don't want to run rifle length gas consider stepping down to 16" you won't give up much in the way of velocity and it'll be just a little more compact. If you want compact consider also the Magpul UBR, consistent cheekweld and adjustable, or an A1 length fixed, depending on your dimensions.
MI SS gen 2 feels very good in my hands, extremely light as well, if its gonna cover the gas block though find a very small low pro, I got MI's own and it needed to be clearanced to prevent contact.
Rings are fine, as long as you can keep them on the upper, which depends on the scope and your prefered cheekweld. Though some people do span the gap. Monolithic or a swan rail eliminates that concern but add weight and expense.

Just picked up a Troy 13" VTAC Alpha rail. Hadn't planned on this one, but at the local gun show, there it was. I think it will be ok. I don't care for the quads and this one has the short rails on the muzzle end for accessories and the full rail on the top, but still has smooth sides for a comfortable grip.

Re: Help me spec my AR

I started out with 24inch bushmaster varmint then the next season I built an 18inch upper with a nf 2.5x 10 and used that for two coyote seasons then I built a complete ar using noveske upper, lower and their 16inch barrel magpul grip and acs stock,jp modular free float handguard, Wilson single stage trigger topped off with an eotech and just love it.wished I done it sooner.that's whats great about the ar platform there's no end to what you can do to set it up.go with what feels good for you.

Re: Help me spec my AR

Check out the DPMS Mk12 barrel. Rainier Arms also has some well-reviewed barrels with their UltraMatch, Match, and Select barrels.

Be prepared to deal with supply issues as lots of AR parts are out of stock.

For a trigger, look at Geissele. For a multi-role rifle, the SSA and SSA-E should work. I run a SSA on my 3-gun rifle and it is everything I need in a trigger.

Re: Help me spec my AR

Noveske 16-18" medium contour barrel, NSR 13" handguard. The NSR is the future of rail systems.

Re: Help me spec my AR

I think I'm going to go with a Black Hole 18" mid length barrel and Geisssele trigger. Keep the ideas coming.
