Well as most of you know I sent my 24" 5R back, to sniper country px, and Scott had a 20" in, and sent it to me ASAP. Well I took my time, mounted a 5-15x50 Weaver Tactical FFP, bore sighted it, 1st shot was about 6" Low and 3" Left. I just did the trick and put xhairs on bullseye moved ret to shot and fired 3 more. This is a 3 shot group @100 still not zeroed, but I figured it would be close enough to get a group out of. $25.95 box of 168 SMK's. I don't even know whether to handload or keep shootin. Thanks

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

keep shooting them until you have a nice batch of matching brass

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

Looks like she'll shoot.

You now have a scope with matching adjustments and subtensions.
No need to try to hold the rifle still and move the crosshairs.
Just read what the scope says and dial it in.

If you go to palmetto state armory, you should be able to get fgmm for around 20 a box.
You could also try the american eagle 168 OTM load. It shoots VERY well and can be found for 16 to 17 a box.
It has crimped in primers so you'll have to remove the crimp before reloading.

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

Another great example of why to buy a 5R if you don't want to, or aren't ready to spend the money for full custom. Even if you bed it into a stock you like better, it's still under half the cost of a custom. Great rifle, and great shooting. Congrats

$20, I'll be on it. Thing is I reload for everything, and I just got my dies, 100Win. brass, and 500 175gr SMK's, and my OAL mod. case. I had 250 of 168's in my cart until the last second, and saw where most 5R's shot best with the 175's. I backed up to 200, and it opened up to just over .520". So I guess I'll be loading to see if I can do better. The 20 is a bit jumpier (if that's a word) but I'm gonna try a few brakes on it. It sure passed my expectations

Lol yes that's still the tag on trigger.

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

Nice group, sometimes you get a shooter out of the box! Let us know how it does at 1000!

The 24" 5R you sent back shoots like this!
Two 5 shot groups @ 100yds

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

Nice

The 5r is great factory tack driver. I miss mine

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

You guys are killing me.
I'll be putting a 5R on order next week.

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

Good to see its working out for you, groundhogbuster.

In Winchester brass and Varget powder explore 43.0-43.5 for the first node and 44.0-44.5 for the second. I don’t have a 5r but the two factory Remington 308’s I have shoot well with an oal of 2.825 which will work well from your mag even though it is jumping a ways to the lands.

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

Glad to hear that not only did Scott take care of you, but that your new rifle is working out well for you. Love my 5R.

Obviously that gun will not shoot, send it back at once.

That sure is a nice place you have to shoot! Is that your backyard? How far of a shot can you set up for there?
Nice starting group as well!

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

That's not even my range, just my front yard. I can get 250yds out of it if I move down to my barn, but my actual range is about 1/4 mi up the road (path) where it opens up into what we've always called "the holler". I have a 50/75 for rimfire, and a 1,2,3,400yd target posts ranged from my bench. I have yet to shoot this thing off the bench, and I think that's why my hunting shots have suffered. I only shot from 1-500yd in BR comps, and never "prone". It's a whole new ballgame for me, trying to get use to shooting as if I'm hunting, IE. Prone. So for 1/200yd shoot n sees I just run out to the lawn. A 308 is a much different round for me as well, as all I shoot is 6BRs, 22-250's, 223's, 204's etc, and even they have a brake, and I need to lose the "free recoil" shooting that I'm use to. Cpl thousand down the tube and I'll be ok.
As to the 24" I sent back, I don't think it would be in Cali by now but nice groups, and I like having a gun that I paid for (scratch free) Yep anal I know, but thanks to you guys I'm satisfied, and I think I'll enjoy the 20" better for my applications, Heck 18" was a long tube for me in the AR world, but they would sure shoot. Thanks for the load data. And YES get a 5R, lol.

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

can't wait to see what it does when you reload & shoot of a good solid bench!

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

Glad you're happy with it! That thing will effin' hammer. A brake will help out for sure. I have a Badger on mine that defiantly helped settle her down.

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

Looks like it's shooting good.

Where you at in western NC? There's a few of us from the other side of the mountain and shoot up in roan mountain area.

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

Just right across the hill man. Over in Green Mtn area. I go to Mahoneys alot, there's alot of good friends hang out there.A guy broke the 200yd BR record over there I was told, some where from East Tenn. I usually go to Johnson City instead of Asheville, and I ride alot over in that area too (Roan Mtn, Spivey, Iron Mtn, etc.

If you're looking for a handload that's less jumpy for the ranges that you're shooting at, someone pointed out to me 39.5 g IMR 3031 and a 168 SMK. I have used this with both Winchester and Remington brass. You might not even get 2500 fps with the load out of a 20" barrel, but it is really a tackdriver in my two rifles. Recoil is very mild.

I like the looks of that 20" 5R a lot. maybe I need one?

Re: 1st Group fired from the 20" 5R

I Miss my 5R 20" so much right now...Wish I'd kept it and sold something else instead...
