Just thought I would introduce myself (Hope this is the right forum to do so).

I have been shooting pistols, ARs and shotguns for a few years now and have decided to begin learning and shooting long range. I live in Cleveland Ohio and have already gained a wealth of info from this website.

I am looking to start with just a basic Remington 700. Lots of models to choose from and still learning all the differences. I have been browsing the for sale section but so many rifles there are upgraded beyond my needs. Have also been checking pawn shops, gunbroker, and armslist.

Any advice would be much appreciated and am glad I joined this forum as this seems to be the best of the best regarding long range shooting.

Joe

Re: New Guy

Welcome to the site, and long range shooting!

A common entry level rifle around here is the 700 SPS Tactical. The only thing you may need to upgrade on it is the stock. It's way too flimsy to work well with a bipod. The Savage 10FCP McMillan is a great rifle that has everything you need already.

If you could give us a bit more info, like your price range, how far you plan to shoot, etc., we could recommend something more suited to your needs.

First off...Welcome to the Hide. There is a TON of valuable information here that will assist anyone interested in getting started into precision, long range shooting.

That said, have a click on the second link included in my sig line below. Most particularly with respect to your question on which rifle, pay close attention to the following links contained in the FAQ links:

Re: New Guy

Welcome, read ORD's links above and then keep your eye on the classifieds here. Most of these fellows are straight shooters, and often have great deals on rifles, optics, and equipment! You might find what fits you rather quickly.

Re: New Guy

Mostly any remmy 700 is a good starting off point. My sps varmint was my first bolt gun and it shot under 1moa with the crappy composite stock.

I'd probably stay away from pawn shops unless you have headspace gauges and a borescope...

Buy from someone here or a reputable seller on GB. Don't trust the guys at your local gun store..l

What makes the sps tactical a good entry level choice? I have looked at the FCP but have been drawn to the 700 for its upgradability(is that a word?). My local smith is a 700 specialist and he recommended that I go that route.

I would like to keep it around $800 for my first bolt action. I currently can get out to about 200 yds with my AR which is a Daniel Defense M4V3. Very accurate gun just need a good scope that I can switch out between the AR and the Bolt action. AR currently carries an Eotech with a 3x magnifier that gives me a decent range.

I would like to get out to about 500 yds plus with a bolt action. I have been looking at Vortex scopes (crossfire/viper) as an entry level quality scope. My first concern is the actual bolt action then will go from there. Plan on building from the 700. Trigger, bedding, muzzle brake, optics, etc.

Thanks for the great welcome to the forum

Joe

Re: New Guy

Welcome
Sounds like you're on the right track with the 700. You haven't talked about caliber, but 308 sounds best for your needs with economical factory ammo and barrel life better than most other calibers. I am recently new to LR shooting and have been having a blast. You'll find you won't be using your AR as much in the future. Good luck and great shooting !

Re: New Guy

The more I read about Tikka T3s the more tempted I am to get one over a 700. For a beginner like me who probably would not be doing heavy modification for a while it may be a good choice. I could always learn on that and then move to something more upgradable. Any thoughts?

I understand the lack of aftermarket parts for the Tikka but I also hear that is changing for the better.

Re: New Guy

I live close by and if you ever want to shoot one of my Surgeons when they arrive let me know. Don't make the mistake I did and purchase a R700 and then start customizing it. You'll never get your initial investment back. Start with something simple and affordable. If you enjoy it and want to upgrade later you wont lose much on it. I've been to every local gun shop around the Greater Cleveland area. My experience is they have no idea what they're talking about. They'll tell you anything to sell you whatever they stock. I'd use this forum as a source to learn from instead of the local gun shops. Also Mark Gordon from Short Action Customs lives an hour from you. He frequents this place and has always taken the time to talk with me on the phone when I've had questions. He's building my next rifle when the stock arrives.

Thanks for the invite. I really am learning the LR completely on my own. I dont have anyone I know who is into it. No one in my family is into guns or hunting. I have never hunted and have been into firearms for about 3 years. I went skeet shooting once and I was hooked. Thousands of dollars later here I am looking for a BA. Went from shotguns to pistols to ARs. Some of my friends are plinkers but thats about it. They are usually asking me for advice about pistols and ARs which is my main area of knowledge, but I have very little knowledge of LR shooting, scopes, moa, clicks etc etc etc

Thats exactly what I dont want to do. All I want is the best rifle for around $600-$900 that will shoot well out of the box. Then save up a little longer and get an entry level scope. Will proceed from there.

This is my exact experience as well. I used to know and talk with a gun shop owner on a regular basis (customer of mine) and he knew a lot but he also had a lot of BS. There were certain guns that I knew everything about and he was just plain ignorant but convinced he knew better than I. I just kept my mouth shut. I am the type of person who picks a firearm and studies it 110%. I purchase after much research and only buy quality firearms. I hate cheaply built guns. I also enjoy a project.

Good to know thanks

Re: New Guy

+1 on the 5r recommendation. I got one as my first bolt action rifle and was extremely impressed with it. It was a tack driver. I unfortunately had to sell it and wish I never did.

Fantastic links thank you. Now I gotta figure out how to watch 1000 youtube videos without pissing off the GF or getting fired from work!

Re: New Guy

You need to get your girlfriend into LR shooting and things will be much happier and easier for you down the road. A good investment would be a cheap 22LR, about $250-300, for your girlfriend. Then you can have a great time at the range with your gun and girlfriend. I've been married 43 years and you need to balance things in life to have happy and satisfying relationships !

Re: New Guy

After reading so much about them on this website, i've been looking at the 5R too. Does every version have the barrel threaded the same way the military's M24 sniper rifle, or is there another version?

Re: New Guy

I think I said that wrong. I meant is the "twist pattern" inside the barrel the same as the military's M24 sniper rifle on all of the versions of the 5R? I see it advertised as "Mil-Spec" in some places, but even the ones that don't say mil-spec still say something about the barrel being the same as the M24 sniper rifle. Curious to know if they're all that way.
