I am sure this has been on here before, but does anyone have a link etc. that the average person can relate to as to how much a trillion is?
I know it is a bunch but I have nothing that I can wrap my mind around. Regards, FM
PS, my mind is small and shallow, just need some comparisons.

Re: How much is a trillion?

If we keep printing money, we'll need a couple pallets of that paper to buy a loaf of bread as happened in Zimbabwe.
They had to print a 100-billion bill in 2008.
Hyperinflation

Re: How much is a trillion?

Well printing more money devalues your current worth. It is estimated that America lost 40% of its value in the last three years.

Piles of cash for a loaf of bread is not far off at this rate.

Re: How much is a trillion?

The interesting thing, oh Foul One, is that while the gubmint prints the money, it doesnt actually own it. They borrow it from the Federal Reserve. Look into how they do that.

Truth. It can get you in trouble.

At least I'll be able to pay off my student loans which are approaching the cost of a house with what it'll cost to buy a candy bar.

That is exactly what they did and what they try to push people into...

The only reason you're/we're not seeing hyperinflation is due to electron funds generated being stuck in financial circles (aka banks/funds, keeping stocks level etc...) but once this (and it will) spills over onto mainstreet you'll see fireworks which would belittle Weimar or Zimbabwe combined.

Re: How much is a trillion?

I was driving my truck the other day and a person was using seconds for each unit.
I could not write it down but it went something like a million seconds was less than a week, a billion seconds was about a month, and a trillion was around 32.000 years.
Did any of you happen to hear that? Regards, FM

Re: How much is a trillion?

The aide rushed into headquarters a said
"General, there were 5 Brazilian soldiers killed today."
The General said "Oh, that's terrible. By the way, how many is a Brazilian?"

Re: How much is a trillion?

One million seconds = 0.031709791983764585 years (around 11.57 days)

One trillion Seconds = 31,688 Years, 269 Days, 1 Hour, 46 Minutes, 40 Seconds

Matt Bracken's "Blue Bucks" don't seem far off.

Maybe someday soon us regular people will be able to wipe our asses with Benjamins too.

Actually, the biggest reason that we're not seeing hyperinflation is that credit is being destroyed at a similar rate to which the Fed is creating new money.

What would cause a real inflationary mess is if there was any velocity to the money in circulation, but velocity is presently very low:

If confidence ever returns and velocity increases, then the Fed will have quite the challenge in removing money in fashion that does not crush a recovery. But it would appear that we are a long ways away from that occurring.

Nothing above should be construed in such a fashion as to endorse the Fed's actions; rather, it is provided to remind people that a few trillion dollars in additional printing doesn't, in itself, guarantee hyperinflation. Indeed, one of the challenges for any investor right now is to account for the distinct possibility of asset deflation. Those simply trying to hang on in this economy have an additional problem in that they may expect to experience simultaneous inflation in the products and services that are required to live (food, fuel, health care, child care, education, etc.) and deflation in the assets which they hold (property and investments in traditional securities).

Re: How much is a trillion?

True stagflation is the name of the game atm... However for inflation to start you need not confidence all you need is collapse of trust in currency (aka already happening). Flight to hard assets has already begun and cards have been dealt and its only a matter of time we will get hyperinflation (basically official reported inflation is underestimated by at least twofold)...

Please read : http://fofoa.blogspot.com/

its long its boring but if you really manage to read it you'll be pretty much informed of what is about to befall western civilization...

Re: How much is a trillion?

wfjames22, thanks to you and others for your input.
Math is definitely not one of my strong suits so I thank you for that. It would take me a long time to figure that out.
While you are at it, how long is a billion?
This thread has become more informative as it goes and does portend a bad bin of shit for us all.
Thanks to all. Regards, FM

Re: How much is a trillion?

To answer your original question:
1000 1000's is a million.
1000 million is a billion.
so one million million is a trillion.
1000 trillion is the current size of the derivative market, which is mostly unregulated and underpins a major portion of the global banking system...

Or if you're thinking in terms of the newest QE3 (3rd round of Quantitative Easing) announced by the Fed Reserve being babbled about on the Main Street Media:

"QE does little to promote job growth. QE1 cost $1.7 trillion. QE2 cost $600 billion. Using Bernanke's math, it cost the Fed $2.3 trillion to create two million jobs. The average annual salary in the U.S. for 2010 was $41,674. By the math given to us by Bernanke himself, each job created by QE has cost the Fed $1,150,000. Doesn't seem to be very cost effective. Can't we figure out a better way to spend the Nation's limited financial resources. Is bailing out a busted bloated banking system all that matters in the world! Where is the outrage???"

A billion seconds is 31 years, 259 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes and 40 seconds.

No problem FM, all I did is google it.

Fact is, its bailing out itself, at our expense.

Three words always apply....

Follow the money.
