Right now I am using a Bushnell 4x12 on my .204 (coyote gun) I was shooting it at 500 yards yesterday with very good results. I was just holding over since the turrets on the scope are JUNK. I was looking into the SS MRAD 6x for my .204 I have the 16x on my competition .22lr and love it.

So what do you think of using a fixed 6x scope. (went back today and shot 440 yards on 6x to see if I could see the target. took one shot sitting with my tall bipod. 1st round hit)

I am open to other suggestions.

Here is the link to the scope i want

If you look at the reticle it has half mil hashes and i really like for taking quick longer shots

Re: Hunting Scope

Only issue I could see with a 6x fixed power scope is if you have to make a quick shot at close range. That said, if the rifle fits you well and the scope/cheek piece are at the right height for you, then you should be able to get on target quickly.

I was a bit apprehensive about this same thing (sort of). I was hunting in South Dakota last year and was using a rifle borrowed from my Uncle. It had a 6-18x scope on it. I left it on 6x the whole time I used it. Rifle fit me well and I was able to make a couple really quick shots when 5 Deer busted out of a hedgerow we were walking. Shot a Buck at about 30yds and then immediately picked out a doe and shot her at about 80-100yds on the run. Shot another doe the same way the next day.

Re: Hunting Scope

The quality of the scope should be good for what you're doing. 6x can be a little much for those in close shots (IMHO). To by pass this problem you can get a 45* mount (either for your scope tube or scope rail) and mount a red dot micro sight set at 25 yards. Personally I'd get the vortex 2-7 or the Burris 1-4 mac/tac30 or something of those equivalent. Having said that I have a few buddies who use either a 6-18 or 8.5-25 scopes for hunting

Re: Hunting Scope

If I were in your shoes I would think about a 3-15 or a 4.5-14 power scope. You can turn it to low power for the real close shots or on high power to shoot at long range. Best of both worlds. Ps. 6 power at 500 yds will be tough. Just my thoughts.

Re: Hunting Scope

Had a Mk4 6.5-20 on a 308 Remmy 5R. Worked great at 6.5 on a 125 yd shot. But when the deer walked under my stand not so much. Could only see deer parts, not the whole deer. 2x or 3x on the low end is much better.

Re: Hunting Scope

It would be tough to beat the 3-10x40 weaver tactical from midway for hunting, and 299. Can see to end of hunting light very easily and can make turret adjustments if needed.

Re: Hunting Scope

Do you really want a FFP on a varmint rifle? Or are coyotes the smallest thing you hunt with the .204?
I have a Swarovski 3.5-18x44 BT on my .220 Swift and it is fricken awesome. I have the ballistic turret set from 100-500m and you can get custom elevation knobs made now for your rifle. Thinking of the same scope for my now being built 7saum. No mil dot reticles though.
