Hey gents, sorry for all the questions as of late... I just don't want to get to far in and have to start over on my build...

I am putting together an AR and came across a very nice deal, basically couldn't pass it up even though it wasnt exactly what I wanted...

It went kind of like this...

New (no box) so I cant return the EL (see below)
Spikes Lower
Vltor MUR-1
Vltor Casv-el

$200.00 bucks...

With that said... the EL was not my choice in terms of rails system as I personally liked the casv-m... but, for the money, it made no sense not to get it.

I am basically putting together a run and gun, HD, type platform but, I do often times get wrapped up in aesthetics (don't kill me for saying that). Long range shooting is not what this will be used for... I aleady have a very nice Compass Lake that is just a tac-driver!

So... with all that said, here is my issues/dilemma... I want a 16" Barrel, not a 14"... specifically I like the White Oak 16". I also want to go with a mid-gas system and would prefer to put the ARMS #41-B Folding Front Sight with Gas Block on it.

Here is the link to the barrel (thoughts on this)? I hear great things!

My questions is since I know that the EL is made for more of a carbine gas system and 14" barrel will this work?

I guess, in the worst case scenario, I will sell the EL for under retail and get the casv-m... or I can find a 14" barrel and get a carbine gas system...

BTW, even though I have read a lot of recommendations for skipping out on the casv systems... that is the look I want.

So... will what I laid out work (and look correct) or would you all advise me to do something else?

Thanks and looking forward to your replies!

Re: AR Build question.. please help if possible

I'm not super familiar with that handguard, but since it's free floating, it should work.

It may not look normal with a middy gas system. For one, there's a cutout for a carbine length FSB. Also, the gas block and a couple inches of gas tube will be visible. Since you admitted that you want your gun to look good (we all do, good on you for saying it, though), then I would advise you to get a different handguard. Get the one you want now. You'll get it eventually anyways, right?

Re: AR Build question.. please help if possible

That sucks... I was really hoping that this was going to work..

Temp, if I go with the carbine gas tube and the ARMS flip sight and gas tube/front post I mentioned, do you know if the 16" white oak barrel will work?

I guess I will be able to live with it as long as those two things will work...

Thanks brother!

Re: AR Build question.. please help if possible

The 16" white oak barrel will work with that setup as long as the barrel has a carbine length gas port. If it has a mid length then you have to get a midlength gas tube.

And you got the upper, lower, and the rail all for $200?!

Re: AR Build question.. please help if possible

A 16" will work fine with the CASV-EL, just make sure to get a carbine length gas system. The link you gave for the barrel is broken.

The CASV-EL should work nicely with that flip sight and carbine length gas. The only thing that may be a problem is accessing the sight when it's folded. Since the sight will be slightly recessed into the handguard, it may limit how easy it is to get the the sight. Then again, it may not. I'm not sure how the sight deploys.

Now, a middy gas system MIGHT work okay with the CASV-EL. I spoke slightly incorrectly before. A few inches of gas tube will be visible from the top of the rail (ie. where the cutout is), but the sides of the handguard should extend up to the gas block. Whether or not this is okay is up to you. There's nothing wrong with a carbine gas system on a 16" barrel, though.

Sweet deal right... fell into it and didnt look back... I will have to call White Oak tomorrow to see if the barrel is a carbine length gas port or mid...

Thanks for the note

That looks like a midlength gas system, just FYI. Make sure to verify before ordering.

Re: AR Build question.. please help if possible

Why not try to trade someone straight for the -m?

I do not see why the -el would not work but it says that it will not work with mid or rifle length systems.

My preference is for mid length systems with 16-inch barrels.

Re: AR Build question.. please help if possible

Hey guys, you have been great on the help... I am changing up a few things but, this will mostly stay the same... here is the breakdown to what I am going to do...

Upper:
Vltor Mur-1
Vltor Casv-El
Daniel Defense or BCM 16" barrel w/Carbine length gas port
ARMS front flip with gas block
Troy rear Flip sight
Fail Zero BCG (I know I should go with a BCM but, for whatever reason I am a sucker for the NB finish on this thing)
BCM Charging handle
BCM Carbine gas tube/Bolt Nut/Delta ring

Lower:
Spikes Sripped Lower
Vltor A5 Buffer tube & Stock
Geissele trigger
Lower parts kit (DPMS, since I will probably upgrade everything over time to BAD device, Ambi Saftey etc..)
Seekins Trigger Gaurd

I am thinking of Cerakoteing a few small parts to really make it pop (I have my own shop to do it) the very small accents all stealth grey... Lower parts pieces... Bad lever, safety and all pins... the rest will obviously be BLACK.

I will be sure to post some pics in a few weeks or so once its all finished up!! I am looking forward to your feedback:)

Re: AR Build question.. please help if possible

Sounds like a cool rig! What muzzle device are you planning to use?

Re: AR Build question.. please help if possible

If I had a choice between MID and CAR gas lengths, I would ALWAYS, ALWAYS go with a MID especially on a 16" barrel. A 16" barrel with a CAR gas system is not optimal in terms of pressure. Unnecessary wear on your gear. Why beat up your AR just because you got a good deal on no-so-optimal parts? Sell the parts and do it right.

Also, I love Vltor but I'm not a fan of that rail system. I don't like having the receiver rail higher than normal nor all the unnecessary weight of that top rail.

I would recommend selling the rail and getting a Troy TRX Extreme Alpha instead in an 9" format (to work with the ARMS #41B-L) along with a MID length 16" barrel. However, unless you really like your iron sights, I would ditch the ARMS #41B-L in favor of a longer rail (11") with a low profile gas block and a rail mounted sight. Don't get me wrong, the ARMS #41B-L is a nice piece of kit, for what it is, but the gas block/rail mounted sight is generally a lighter setup and if they are back ups, then chances are you won't be using it much anyways, why carry extra weight? Especially at the muzzle end of your barrel?

Edit: Also, skip the DPMS parts kit and get one from Palmetto. MUCH better quality with parts from a same sub-contractor that makes parts for Colt. Similar in price too and sometimes cheaper when they have them on sale.

BUY QUALITY.
