i am looking to start a build rifle.

i am looking for some guidance on caliber selection. and the rifle itself. make, model, etc.

i will be shooting target/tactical matches out to 13-1400yds.

the wife wants it to be under 3000 are my only limitations
which would be for the rifle only, i already have glass.

i own a 300wm but its a tank at around 25lbs.

looking to go a bit lighter and maybe a smaller load with minimal recoil. possibly a 6.5, .260 or something in that ballpark.

all advise and opinions are appreciated.

Re: need advise

I'd suggest a Rem 700. Lots of accessories and stock configurations to let you build what you want and the way you want it.

The 6.5x47Lapua and .260 Rem are very close in ballistics and good choices that will give you the lower recoil you're looking for. You might also consider the .243 Win, with the 107gr Sierra or 115gr DTAC.

Re: need advise

Do you have your heart set on a bolt action (I know you're in the bolt action section), or would you be up for anything? I just get a vibe that a GAP-10 would work well for you in 6.5, especially for comp. But you can definitely look into their bolt action rifles as well.

Re: need advise

well i am not dead set on a bolt action but i do prefer them. im not so sure what the accuracy compairison would be like between the gasser and the bolt gun. companys like les baer claim that their gas guns will do as good if not better than most bolt guns. i just find this hard to believe, it may be true but i have never seen it. im not the type of person to spend this kind of money on a whim or a prayer.

on the other hand i will look into the GAP, i also have heard that the JP rifles are a good set up as well but i will most likeley go with the bolt gun in the end and drop whatever i buy in an xlr.

also what model does remington make a .260 in?

I don't think I could do it with a 1.25 straight blank @ 30". Maybe if the stock was filled with lead too.

Re: need advise

Kinda like a speed boat, it ain't so much the cost of the boat when ya buy it, but how much it costs to feed it when you use it.
