I have a barrel that was recently purchased used with only a few rounds down it. Its a Harte 26" chambered in 6X and has a 1-8 twist. Its going on a Savage model 10 action, as it was previously.

Problem is, I gave it to a local gunsmith who doesnt know their ass from a hole in the ground. 6 months later I couldnt take it anymore and got my barrel back from them. When I got my barrel, the stupid bastards had put a 1/4" spacer between the barrel and recoil lug because they tried to headspace it as a .270 then a .308. I even gave them a round and the barrel says 6X on it if that isnt obvious enough. Either way, they dicked it up bad. So I brought it to a good gunsmith. They called today and said that the previous gunsmith, Delta fucking Arsenal of Meridan CT, had cut the shoulder and headspaced it wrong (we knew that all ready). So the good gunsmith has to cut the shoulder square and ream the chamber again. At least the spacer is gone.

Heres the question-6X chamber reamer is no longer around. Even if it is, should I continue shooting it? Or should I ream it to 6XC or even .243? I have 500 22-250 cases but I dont want that to change my opinion. 6XC cases I can purchase and dont need to be fire formed. .243 is an awesome round but heard it burns out fast. Rob1 will say otherwise but im still waiting to hear from him. What should I do guys? Gunsmith needs to know ASAP

Re: Which cal to ream

6mm-22-250 would be my suggestion since you have the brass handy, or you can go 6mm Creedmoor and fire the 22-250 brass into shape.

The 6-250 has been placing well/winning XTC for decades.

Sorry to hear about the screw job that moron-shop did.

Re: Which cal to ream

At some point a guy might consider looking at work like this as a bad marriage. The best shop in the world might act like a counseler and "Dr. Phil" you back together.

The other option is to just nature take its course and get the divorce over with.

A new barrel runs about $330 bucks from most vendors. With guys like Bugholes and PappaGrizzly stocking premium brands 10x deep it's an easy solution that at the end of the day gives you peace of mind.

Good luck with your project.

Whats the difference between the 6xc and 6-250? As long as I can continue using my brass and the 1000 rounds of sierra 105 I purchased and never used.

Re: Which cal to ream

Not sure to be honest, the 6XC has more capacity though I know that. There are a couple of XTC High Power guys at my club that have gone 4000rd or more with their 6-250's shooting 105 and 115 class. I think they're getting right about 3000fps with the 105's and 100fps or so less with the 115 class.

Re: Which cal to ream

I was educated on the 6X. Only need to use the .243 reamer held .130 short and you get the 6X. Ill stick with that for now as I have all the dies and brass and its the cheapest to do. Next barrel and rifle, it will most deffinately be a .243. Thanks guys
