Is the actual body of the die any different then a standard seating die or is it a better quality? Example being is if I was to buy a competition seater vs just adding the micrometer stem to the top of my standard die, am I gaining anything?

The micrometer is not where the Redding comp seater shines. It is in the sleeve that holds everything straight during the process of bullet seating. IMHO, the sleeve holds runout to a minimum and makes for more accurate ammo.

The addition of the micrometer top is not the secret to the Redding Competition bullet seater. The sliding sleeve and floating seater stem is what makes the Redding Competition bullet seater the best seater with the lowest runout. Just be aware that if you like to load compressed loads you will eventually crack the floating seater stem.

Redding/Forster seaters are tied for first place in seating dies, their 'straight line' alignment sleeves are for the ammo, mic seating heads are for the user.
All other seater brands/models are tied for second place. All of 'em.

I have the Forster seating die and I'm very happy with it.
On a side note, Forster will make you a custom sizing die for a very small fee but you'll need your chamber dimensions or, a copy of your reamer specs. They did a sizing die for me and it makes things real easy.

So i went ahead and bought me a competition seater since it is a better die. i thought the only difference was in the micro stem but now i know and as G.I. Joe always said "knowing is half the battle"
now i just have to sell off my older set since i got a bushing die with it as well. off to the for sale section i go!

I think you will like what the Redding Competition Bullet Seater does for your seating consistency and concentricity. Testing done by myself and others has shown the only other seater to consider for best bullet seating consistency and concentricity is the Forster benchrest / micrometer seater. I found the Forster as good as the Redding competition seater and possibly a better choice if you regularly load compressed powder loads. For uncompressed loads the Redding produces a little bit better concentricy overall possibly due to the full floating seater stem and tighter sliding sleeve. Keep us posted on your results!
