Mounting a Atlas - rail or a spigot

Decided that a Atlas is the way to go on my Tikka build. It started life as a Varmint in 260 Rem but I'm going to put it in a GRS Long Range stock

This stock is "prepared for the VersaPod bolt and a 1913 Picatinny rail". I have only used Harris bipods in the past so I'm looking for opinions on those two mounting options.

Re: Mounting a Atlas - rail or a spigot

While I don't own a platform that uses a spigot mounted bipod right now, I think, if given the option, that's the way I'd go. On a spigot mount, it would get your rifle a little closer to the ground. I think the Atlas is just a bit too high for me, so this is a +1. Theoretically, by moving the bipod further forward, you should get a little bit of extra stability, but I doubt you'd be able to notice.

Re: Mounting a Atlas - rail or a spigot

I like the rail mounted because it is more centered which allows for greater extremes when shooting up or down hill. If you have to carry the rifle, the weight is more centered.

Good luck with this one.

Re: Mounting a Atlas - rail or a spigot

I'm not familiar with that stock but have gone rail-mounted on both H-S stocks and the KMW Sentinel. Having went from a 9-13" Harris to the Atlas, I was used to the taller height so the shorter Atlas seems just right to me mounted on a rail. Of course with the Sentinel, that's not as high because the fore end of the stock is thinner.

Re: Mounting a Atlas - rail or a spigot

I have had both and to be honest, I couldn't really tell the difference. It was on my TRG, but I did like the look of the qucik disconnect way better that the standard rail.

Re: Mounting a Atlas - rail or a spigot

My Atlas is rail mounted but the rail is recessed so that with the bipod off the rail's flush with the rest of the fore end so it can ride bags without hanging up. The Atlas' location is similar a spigot mount and I find that most of the time I have to extend the legs a couple notches to get on target with a rear bag when prone. Then again I don't have the usual stock.

Re: Mounting a Atlas - rail or a spigot

Yes McFred I had seen your post - great looking solution.

I expect that I'll have to extend the legs also when using the monopod on the GRS - it comes as standard with the stock. I will probably go with the rail. Will begin with a Harris and see how I like the placement on the stock.

But maybe the spigot is the way to go as in the future when I rebarrel the rifle I'll most likely get a longer barrel -> better ballance with the bipod mounted forward?

Re: Mounting a Atlas - rail or a spigot

I'd put the bipod as far forward as practical but I don't think I'd lose any sleep over it. It's probably better to just go shooting and see what works best for you than to just accept people's advice off the internet.
