So I have this old model 70 with iron sights, the rear is in a dovetail and tapped out, but the front has no screws, dovetails, or anything. I'd like to remove it but dont know how. Its an old one, my other mod 70 I drifted the sight pin off and there was a screw under it, this one has nothing. Any ideas?

Thats what I assumed, but I didn't know if that was commonplace on these guns or not. If so, could simply heating up the barrel an smacking it with a mallet do? Or maybe heatup the frontsight base with a little butane torch until it comes off?

The old 70's had an integral front sight. What is wrong with it that it needs removed? You will need to turn it off on a lathe or shorten the barrel if it is integral. Some of those barrels are worth quite a bit, depending on cal and condition. I do not remember the SN area where they went to soldered but it would be over 200,000. If you removed a soldered on one, it will be ugly as well. What cal? What SN?

I am out of pocket for a day or two, but I will get the info for you rth. Its a .264 magnum with a band and the iron sights. I only wanted to remove them because it's a scoped rifle, and the iron sights wont be used ever again. And the barrel may be shot out (yet to be confirmed), but if I dont rebarrel it, I'd like to pull the sights off.

    Re: Removing iron sights Mod70

    Sir,
All .264's were late rifles with sights added. Some had stainless barrels which had a flat finish that almost makes them looked parkerized. I think they were iron coated and the iron blued. Others are blued CM steel. Also, most are shot out as it takes very few rounds and then the ones that were not shot out often have rust under the copper and the same effect is present. I have spent a few days cleaning a 70 barrel and then trying to figure out how to get that copper back in the darn thing. Looks better that way. If you remove sight, can be done with heat, but it will be very ugly. Better IMO to just shoot it.

Thanks for the input, I wont be doing anything more to the gun until it shows some degree of accuracy. As of right now, it shoots minute of haystack. I think a new barrel is in store for this old beauty. Probably a 7mag or something like that.

Perhaps, but this rifle was my Gradfather's so it wont be sold ever.
