Guys,
You helped me decide to pick the 7-08 over the .308. Now tell me which you would go with between the 7-08 and the .284 Winchester, especially interested in the 162 hornady's and the 175 smk.

Thanks

Re: 7-08 vs. .284 Win

Both the 7-08 and the 284 are fine rounds. IMHO I would also consider A 280AI it will shoot the 162's like a laser with Good performance.

Re: 7-08 vs. .284 Win

The short answer here is the 284 will provide ~100-200fps more than a 7-08 with any given bullet.

For example:

708, 162@2775
284, 162@2925

708, 175@2700
284, 175@2825

708, 180@2650
284, 180@2800

The disadvantages of the 284, is that brass is rarer, and it is rather cramped in a short action. If you put it on a long action, you will be limited in choices of (relatively) high capactity magazines. Also, based on my experience with 284, it seems to be more sensitve to barrel length than 708.

ETA: Higher velocites can be had using Reloader 17, allegedly...though I haven't personally seen the magic veloctiy boost from it. For my two 284s, RL17 couldn't do anything H4350 wouldn't.

You would have to hear, cause I doubt you would know.lol

Re: 7-08 vs. .284 Win

well i have a 7-08 and a 280ai coming so... maybe a 284 is needed to round out the trio

Re: 7-08 vs. .284 Win

I was just looking at all three last night, what a bunch of badass cartridges! I love the .284 and the .280AI, I have an old winchester that may get a new tube in either one. These decisions are so hard!

Re: 7-08 vs. .284 Win

You can't go wrong with either caliber. I have a new 7-08 and a go-to 280AI. I think I'm covered

ColdBore- My 280AI is built off a Winchester. Can't complain one bit- it's a "freakin' LAZER" (Dr Evil style).

Truer words have not been spoken.

Re: 7-08 vs. .284 Win

Why go smaller?? 284 does everything the 7mm-08 does only better. I have 1160 rounds of 162s down mine at close to 3000fps and it show no barrel wear at all. Whats not to like!!

I shoot a 7mm08 because the local comps allow "short action cartritdges only, and no magnums"
I'm pushing the 162 A max just under 2800 fps, acccording to my dope sheet.
800 yards = 5.5mils
900 yards = 6.6mils
1000 yards =7.9mils
1100 yards =9.2mils
The real question is what do you intend to do with this rifle? Comps, hunt, and at what range???
I am heading to the range to get a buddies rifle ready for him, it's a 7mm Ultra mag it is pushing the Berger 180's at 3,000 fps, with a BC of .659 the almost fly by themselves. LOL
You can't go wrong with any 7mm.

Re: 7-08 vs. .284 Win

There is some interest brewing ala 7CM
some report very respectable velocity on par with 284, so they claim. I,m a skeptic thus far but more are drinking the 7cm koolaid.
284 will have OAL issues even running alpha mags, bullet will sit way back incase. Run a 284 shehane and you circumvent case cap issue.
So 7cm or 284shehane

Re: 7-08 vs. .284 Win

From what I'm reading the .284 could be a PITA with short actions and I'm not interested in going to a long action. This rifle will be 99% used for paper and steel out to 1,200-1,300yrds. I love the .308 but I am realizing the limitations at those ranges.

I have a SA 284. Alpha magazines and COAL at 2.950". Easy 2800fps with 175smk. Gets out to 1200 yards no problem.

I don't get all the hoopla about bullets being seated deeper than the neck/shoulder junction...lots of cartridges do it, including the snipershide beloved 260.

In terms of case capacity only, the 284 is NOT neutered at 2.950".
