This may be a hope and a prayer but what do you guys think about a 7mm rem mag past 1000 yards say to 1600 or so? I have lots of brass and love the high bc of the .284 bullets. I also have the dies for it already. I was planning on either a broughton 5c barrel or a bartlein finished at 32 inches. I am looking at a 1in9 twist witch will allow me to use the 180 bergers. Is this enough gun? Info will be greatly appreciated.

Re: 7mm rem mag for beyond 1000

Outside of hunting bullets i dont have many rounds down range with a 7rem mag but i do have a 7mm saum built to similar specs as your planed build. With a 30" finished 1/8.5 kreiger its able to launch the 180 hybrids and VLD to 1800y with ease. Im sure it will go further but thats as far as i have shot it yet.

Im now a big fan of the 7mm rounds.

Re: 7mm rem mag for beyond 1000

Check the 7mm mag section in the reloading depot for info on loads/twists/distances they've been aired out to.. You should have no problem getting to 1500+ yards with a 162 Amax, or Berger 180 hybrid. Good Luck with your build. I really don't think you want or need the 32" barrel, that's gonna be pretty damn unwieldy.

What are you waiting on? Get it stated. Yes, the 7mmRM will get you out to 1,600 easily.

Re: 7mm rem mag for beyond 1000

I have shot mine to 1760 and it worked great. The bullet used was a 168 grain Berger vld.

Re: 7mm rem mag for beyond 1000

Well I was going to start with the 32 inch barrel and if it just seemed to unbearably long I will shorten it but I can't add to one.
Gonna look at the load data and hopefully get started on the build after new years.

Re: 7mm rem mag for beyond 1000

Start at 28". That's plenty long. I run 168 VLDs at 3100 in my 7mmRM, via 28" tube .

Re: 7mm rem mag for beyond 1000

26-28" barrel is all thats really needed. I designed a reamer specifically for the 180's and it has worked out pretty well. Runs 3020-3100 in 26-28" Broughtons with Retumbo and 180 bergers. I have personally shot mine out of 1200, and some of my customers have went out to a mile with no problems.

The old misconceptions about the 7 Mag are from a poorly designed short throated chamber. Over the years it has also been downloaded to make the new magnums look more impressive. Set the bullet out where it belongs, and it turns it into a new animal with the powder available today.

I have to agree a longer throat on the 7mm mag really brings it to life and make the 180gr shine

Re: 7mm rem mag for beyond 1000

If you set the 180's out where they belong, will they still fit in a long action mag or do you have to single feed them?

Re: 7mm rem mag for beyond 1000

The 7 mag Bergers have one of the highest BC of any I have seen. So you should be good to go. Higher than the 30"s.

Re: 7mm rem mag for beyond 1000

7mmAM what are the details on your reamer if you are willing to share them? I am wanting a long throat reamer for the longer bullets. Thanks

With the 180 Berger Hybrid, loaded to 3.50" (touching lands), using Retumbo, and my atmospheric conditions yesterday, and published G7 of 0.345, my ballistics app (<span style="font-style: italic">Ballistics FTE</span>) is telling me my rounds should be doing 1141 fps (still supersonic, barely) at 1757 yards.

7mm Rem Mag, 3.50" COAL, 180 Berger Hybrid 3050fps
100 yd, +3.50 MOA high, -1.0 MOA drift (10mph), 2919 fps, 0.10 sec TOF
325 yd zero,
1000 yd, 18.25 MOA drop, 4.0 MOA drift (10mph), 1849 fps, 1.26 Sec TOF
1760 yd, 55.25 MOA drop, 10.75 MOA drift (10mph), 1141 fps, 2.83 Sec TOF

Above are calculated values from a ballistics app, based on preliminary pressure testing velocities. Additional data in this post

I have a bit of experience with 7RM. 175SMK's run so well I didn't try any other and because none of my shooting is beyond 1k. This bullet at 2950, 67.5 4831sc is reliably accurate, knocks pure hell out of steel and smacked movers at 600 one after another at K&M....in the rain. Ideally, in my view, shoot 175smk to 1k and a berger vld beyond if the smk doesn't get it done for you. Consult the pertinent information in the latest ballistics authority for optimal chambering and barrel dimensions. Much information here is reliable, and much of it is not. Bryan Leitz is a top shooter and ballistician/scientist. Trust his views.

Remington 7Mag 1-10twist 168 Hunting VLD 62.5gr RL22 2,900 and change velocity. Just shot to 1440-1450 yesterday. Lot's happening with the wind on top of the mountain, but, with a rock pit in the back ground and our steel sitting there, one bullet splash makes it way doable. Build that puppy!
